  • Spirit of Tasmania - seriously?

Just priced visiting the north island for the school holidays. Towing the trailer, with a family of five return is just over $3k, for the ferry only.

This will be what makes us move back to the mainland, if warm ocean water once a year is going to cost that much. Just a little bit grumpy at the moment.

My brother did the trip the opposite way a couple of years ago and was shocked at the prices. I think he ended up ferrying the prado across and sent the family by air, which worked out cheaper.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

$526 each leg if you choose a day ticket... so $1052 return... bit cheaper!

And try getting on it. They are only running night sailings until the new year.

Thats a rip off. Its as bad as the Kangaroo Island ferry here in SA, 4WD + Camper + Kids is the guts of $1000 return for a 15km journey.

That must be a 'school holiday rip-off'.
We're going down in Feb 12 for $529 each way with camper - total 10.7m length, under 2.1 tall.
Our's is probably an off-peak special. (our 1st trip to the former apple isle).

KI is enticing but those prices are ludicrous!!

3 people return with trailer 8.8 mts under 2.1 $1300. plus fuel to get brisbane to ferry. What a rip off. Just as well there is a lot to see and do on the little island.
                Total of 6700km in 4 weeks, $1700 @14.4 l/100km.
Best place was when we walked to a special place after dark and the little penguins came in to their young. They even walked over our feet. Not many people know this spot and hopefully stays that way so big brother stays away.

OMG, we just started talking about doing this trip next Christmas...
Day tickets seem to be MUCH cheaper, but if they do not offer them over Xmas, then whats the point.
Doing the comparisons between flying to wife and tin lids down...

So, I'll be booking early, and buying a camper during during year... Hopefully a Jayco Swan (used).

And yes, flying the wife and tin lids down is better..

We are seriously thinking about going back to the south island next christmas as well. Last time we went about 7 years ago it was $1500 for the return journey with a 4wd and CT, I would expect it to be considerably more than that now but it is a bit hard to work out costs from their website as they dont give accomodation costs.

Anyway even if we have to pay 3 grand for the return trip I think that is reasonable value given the length of the trip and the time of year we want to travel.

                          Cheers Andrew

I have vivid memories of the spirit of tassie trip over from Melb to Devonport .... A 6 metre swell across the bass strait was just too much for the other half who spent the entire night over the bowl heaving! Whenever I talk of the spirit of tassie, I see her face start to turn green.

If your wife/kids don't have their sea legs, be prepared for a veeeeery long ride if the sea gods are unkind! I don't remember it being overly expensive for the two of us and the rig, but that was probably because we didn't have a camper in tow.

                              Andrew,

I guess if we know up front how much to expect, and budget for it, then it is what it is..
But given Switched comment above, the other half will be flying down...
