I would have loved to have a set on me just to know what they are capable of doing. Oh well... next time maybe?

I tried packing whatever I could find (rocks, twigs, etc) under the wheels, but the Prado just kept sinking further into the mud. It was the kind of mud that was even hard to pull your foot out of as you were walking around because it was so sticky... Finally, with the help of a passer by, we used the spare tyre as a ground anchor in a sandy bit and winched out (even that took quite a few goes because the tyre would just keep being pulled out of the sand).

Here another shot of the mess I had to clean up:
I had to bump this thread when I saw this post... This was me on Sunday. A family trip to the snowys, having fun exploring every side trail I could find, when all of a sudden I find myself slipping all over the place.... then stop.

Just last week, I bought a set of Maxtrax, which I almost didn't bring because they didn't fit elegantly on the roof next to the luggage pod and skis. At the last moment I threw them in the back, which as it turns out was a great move.

That mud looks like nothing until you go past the point of no return. I was running stock road tyres at highway pressure so once I stopped, she wasn't going to move. No amount of diff locks, traction control, crawl mode, multi terrain settings, low range, was going to move the Prado.

I got the Maxtrax out and did a bit of digging and placed them under the wheels, but still no go. After two goes at it and the driver's foot-well starting to look like the one in the above post I had one of those forehead slapping moments... tyre pressure! How could I be so dumb... anyway I did some more digging around the back of the front wheels and put the Maxtrax in place, then dropped the pressures down to just under 20PSI, back in the car and just like the advertisements on YouTube, after a little wheel spinning out she popped right out. I basically had no control where I was going, gravity was pretty much controlling my destiny at that point but at least I was moving. Eventually it hit some dry ground and I stopped to assess the situation.

So about 45 minutes after getting stuck and not too much feedback from the passenger seat as how I should listened and not gone that way, I was pretty happy that we were able to get ourselves out of the pickle. The kids in the back didn't even stop watching the DVD. I know it isn't much when it comes to some of the stories here but for a newbie to this game it was still a bit of an air punching moment I pretty much destroyed a pair of shoes and there was no way the Maxtrax were going back in the car now so to hell with elegance, out came the occy straps and on the roof they went.

Where this happened was not Providence Portal as above but on a side track on the road to the Old Adaminaby township, but it looks as though there are springs that bubble up through the ground at certain points because it was high above the lake's waterline and everywhere else around the ground was dry. Unfortunately at the time I did not think to take photos but as I said, the above pictures sum it it up nicely.

Here are some pics of the aftermath

This side little adventure aside though, Lake Eucumbene is the best place explore with a 4wd. It has a bit of everything and is pretty safe if you aren't silly. One section we explored was further west, that was essentially a flood plain that had become part of the lake and was at one point under water but not for ages (probably 80's) and the foliage had all grown back, yet the old roads were still there, sort of, so it made for some great exploring.

Photos of the area - well recomended

Well that's a shame.... I would hardly want to display them so prominently if I cannot get back that pristine orange luster.
