    Re: fuel prices

    Current prices in Darwin:

    Unleaded $1.429/L
    Diesel $1.609/L

These prices are down about 8c/L from a week ago now. With the 180L tank and scanguage II, it was great being able to anticipate this price drop and drive on past the bowsers for a while longer until the prices eventually fell without the need to urgently refuel 8)

            Re: fuel prices

It really doesn't make any sense at all does it. Petrol is now also down below $1.20 at most stations near me. Diesel came back to around $1.55 odd and stayed there. Almost every time I go past fuel stations on my way to work in the last few weeks it seems another few cents has come off the price of petrol. Diesel is very sluggish to move though. I really don't appreciate subsidizing the petrol price if that's what is going on. Sure feels like it at times........

              Hear, hear IRON-PAWW :!: :!: :!:

It amazes me that there can be such a variance in prices between petrol and diesel, and also between certain locations. Sure, minor variations in price in local areas due to competition is a good thing. But clear differences between one location and another without any rationale just doesn't make sense. Volume of sales can't be the reason because, for instance, fuel is cheaper in Katherine (330km South of Darwin) than Darwin, and there would be much fewer sales there than in Darwin plus the fuel comes from Darwin in any case (meaning extra freight costs need to be taken into account). Another example was obvious during my trip from Darwin to Broome. Fuel was cheaper in Halls Creek than at other stops along the way between Katherine and Broome. It was even cheaper than Kununurra. As at today, the fuel prices at these locations is:

              Fitzroy Crossing:
              Unleaded 150.7
              Diesel 171.1

              Halls Creek:
              Unleaded 163.9
              Diesel 171.9

              Kununurra:
              Unleaded 176.9
              Diesel 179.9

              Katherine:
              Unleaded 144.9
              Diesel 167.8

              Broome:
              Unleaded 159.9
              Diesel 170.2

Yet obviously the fuel needs to come from somewhere and be freighted to Halls Creek. So how can it be so much cheaper? :|

At least the 180L Prado fuel tank gives you an ability to continue driving until you reach a cheaper fuel outlet.

Another example is that fuel could be purchased at the BP port outlet in Broome for 8c/L cheaper than any of the outlets in Town (less than 5km away). In my mind, this is a clear demonstration of the mark-up being made by outlets to purely increase profit, as I have no doubt that the BP port outlet is still making a profit on its sales too.

I also don't understand why fuel outlets interstate are allowed to raise prices depending on the day of the week (they dont' do this in NT, but I think this is because fuel is dearer every day of the week!). This seems to be a clear grab for profit when consumers are most vulnerable. Imagine if pubs were regularly raised the price of beer, etc. each Thursday to Sunday just because that's when more people drink! Or if Shopping Centres were to raise the price of milk and bread during weekdays because that's when more people have cereal and toast.

Some form of collusion and price fixing seems to be the only obvious explanation IMHO... yet for some reason the Government and Australian Competition And Consumer Commission can't seem see this or do anything about it.

On the way to work the local BP had Diesel for 154.4 a litre  while unleaded was about 106. A hugh price gap there. I understand that the pricing is worked out in different ways but nearly 50c. WTF!
