What do you need explained Andrew? Most of the terms I'm seeing used here are pretty commonly used these days but I'm happy to enlighten you on any you need help with.

You know, the chances of this being the issue are 0/100 but an interesting case nonetheless.

A friend brought their computer to me with exact same issue. Just over time was running slower and slower. Did the usual checks and nothing obvious showed up found the windows7 install was over 5 years old. Figure it won't be helping the issue so I put it down to just a poorly maintained PC with lots of niggling little issues making up one big one. Fresh install time! Should note, the unit was an older i3 4GB Ram. Figured best bet here is jam on W8 and be done. Popped it on and all went well but still quite slow.... and then during a reboot I spotted it... MEM 1024MB OK.. wait a minute... what?... huh? It's supposed to have 4GB... Nek Minnit!

Rip the side of the case and there they all were... proud as punch... 4x1GB sticks proud as proud could be. Now in my limited experience. Dead ram stick usually means, won't past POST.... will this puppy had three dead sticks that all passed POST. Pulled out all four and popped in 4x2GB phwooooaaarrrrr!!!!

Cool story, I'll tell another one later.

Fair enough, I just know a lot of people fill up their hard drives with junk and then wonder why it gets slow. You have to understand how files are laid out on a HDD to get what I was saying about slack space before but sounds like that isn't the issue.

Like I said before someone with some good tech skills needs to have a look at it. Consider that before plunging into a rebuild unless you are confident with backing up your favourites and documents (assuming they are on the HDD in the PC) and re-installing all your programs.

Did you at least try re-seating the RAM in the slots or testing the sticks one by one before you decided they were faulty?

So with my old computer dying I bought a new laptop, Toshiba if that makes a difference. I had XP on the old computer and now have windows 8. Basically Windows 8 sucks big time, I hate it with a passion after using it for a couple of days.

So how do I get a different system that actually makes sense?

                Cheers Andrew

Yes mate, and when I found the one good stick I ven moved it around into different position to make sure it was the sticks and not the sockets at fault.

I went through this too, don't much like Win 8 either.

One thing that may be causing more shit than it's worth is any Toshiba GUI (Graphic User Interface). Basically they overlay their front page over the standard Windows one in a lot of Laptops for some 'unexplained and DUMB' way to seek self glorification of there company name. I always work from the windows native desktop in my Acer Laptop, removes a lot f the confusion. Not to say you do have an overlay on your Toshiba but it may have.

To find files or directories under win 8 you need to use the search area, must be intuitive to Gen Y types but sure as hell not to me.
