Sorry this may seem like a silly question to some but the fridge/freezer units, can they be used as just a freezer. With that I mean you have two compartments right, one fridge and one freezer. If so I mean using both compartments as a freezer.

Or single compartment units, can they be used as a dedicated freezer. My way of thinking is a smaller unit, say 30lt or so, and use this for a freezer with a icebox for a drinks, dairy etc.

Does anyone have any comments on the dual zone fridges ? Im thinking along the line of the 60 litre Engel two compartment jobby. Unfortunately the Waeco is the wrong shape being slightly narrower but taller and wont fit in my trailer, Does having two seperate temps actually work out in the heat ? They seem like a great idea in theory, my other thought was to get a second smaller fridge to run as a freezer but my DC current consumption will be higher with 2 smaller Engels than than the 60 litre dual compartment, just.

Brilliantly, very happy withthe purchase. I am running it from the rear power socket at the moment. The cans stay cold for ages after it is turned off, I have been able to get them out still very cold after being in the frigde for more than 12 hours with it turned off.

sounds like its doing the job mav, good to hear, but you still need to get the dual battery for piece of mind.

Last trip away to LCMP... 4 days (3 nights) in hot temps around 35 or 36 in the shade. We took the 58l Coleman Extreme esky and the 32l Waeco.
Initially the Waeco was going to act as the freezer and the esky as the cooler but after the first day on the trails I just split everything up so I could have nice cold drinks with me (in the waeco) while I was out on the trails and kept the frozen stuff in the esky.

I always use 1 x block ice and 1 or 2 party ice bags in the cooler and usually there is still block ice left in the cooler after a 4 day trip.

I think for a trip where I really did need to keep stuff frozen I would use the Waeco as the freezer and stock up the Esky via the waeco so things weren't hot going in.
              Cheers, Leon

hey snaga have you seen the extended section that you can buy for the waecos, it sits on top of the cf 50 and 60 to give yo an extra 20l, i know it wont fit on the waeco you have but is a good idea, its not a true dual zone but if you put ya frozen stuff on the bottom and drinks on to i think it would go ok, but it is $200 to $300 depending where you buy it, you can buy a lot of ice for that. cheers samo

Can't say I have... I know the Bushman range have the extension collars but didn't know the Waeco's do as well. Would be nice to get a few extra lt's in the fridge though

Do those collar jobs really work all that well?? You can get them for the Engels too but I've heard differing reports on how good they actually are. Increased fridge space yes but some weird temp differentials going on inside the fridge if I remember correctly. Like you need to chill stuff near the bottom a little too much to get the gear in the top part chilled nicely? Is that Bunkum???

I have heard similar, though the guy saw it as an advantage he had a 40 litre engle with the collar and he reckoned that it made it more like a dual zone. He ran the Engel colder than he would normally and placed frozens at the bottom and refrigderated items at the top. I am still deciding if I should get one for my 60 litre Engle.

Hmmmm it sounds like a real balancing act though. Like ok I set the fridge up to freeze stuff in the bottom compartment, and have the stuff sitting up top chilled only. What about leaving it overnight? Seems to me that you run the risk of having the stuff up the top freeze also as the inner temps equalize. Maybe during the day you could get away with it as the outside heat would help keep the top unfrozen ( I assume!!). But surely at night you'd run the risk of freezing the whole fridge?? Just seems a bit iffy to me. But I've never tried it out.

For simply extending the fridge space though and being able to replace the original lid if needed would definitely be worth considering. Still I fit enough into the 40L as is.

I don't think he was running it at a freeze setting just a little colder than your normal fridge settings. He said he usually went away for about a week he would place pre frozen stuff if the bottom (that he intended to use later in the week) and refrigderated stuff on the top.

I've had a CF-40 for about four years now and no rattles at all - no matter what the road conditions (bumps, currugatiosn etc.) are like. A rattle would indicate something hitting something else and in time that something will surely give...

My rattling waeco CF50's been at the service repair place for a week - guy believes the problem is that one (or more?) of the springs suspending the compressor has let go - all apparently inside a sealed unit?
So the fridge is now on a truck to Waeco HQ for inspection, and he reckons that I'll probably get a new replacement fridge in a week or two.
At least the warranty seems to be ok!
