As I said I have heard it but never tried it.

I find that by setting my Waeco to show about 3 degrees beer is nice and cold and does not freeze.

If I were going to try the ply option I would probably put some frozen meat on top of ply and then the beer.

Ok just got back from Margaret River. Now heck, it was 2 degrees overnight anyhow and only about 16 degrees in the daytime so it really didn't do much serious work. But the whole time I had it hovering around the 2 mark on the dial and that little inbuilt temp readout hovered around the 3 degrees mark the whole time. Does anyone know how accurate that inbuilt thermometer really is? All the Engel manuals say it is a guide only. I haven't yet tested it with an accurate thermometer. No issue with it really, I was just a little surprised that it froze on such a low setting. But I guess it won't do that in summer as you guys say.

Wouldn't you be better off putting the plywood higher up in the fridge? That would keep the majority of the cooling lines enclosed below and only a small amount above. You'd get freezing below and non freezing above?? Just a thought. Isn't that how those two zone setups work??

Just bought an Evakool 85 litre fridge/freezer and took it up Weipa way for 10 days. It was great. Mate with us has a new 80 Engel. The Evakool is $300 cheaper with a 5 year warranty (3 for the Engel) and also came with a free 240/12volt transformer. I also have 2 Chescolds. Only problem with them is they won't freeze stuff down if you want to when it's a bit warm. Also opening and closing them in warmer climes really knocks them around (my kids get used to "Shut the bloody fridge!!!"). They're okay if you really bulk them up with cold stuff before you leave home. Beers etc take at least overnight to chill and then only when they'res heaps of cold stuff already in there. Made the mistake when the Chescold was new of taking it away empty just to use for my beers - after 2 days the beers were drinkable - just. By contrast I put a dozen warm beers in the Evakool, cranked it up and they were okay after 2 hours - just okay but drinkable - the ones after that - beautiful.

I am about to buy a fridge and I'm leaning towards the Waeco CF50 over the Engel 40. Purely from an external size and internal volume perspective as the Waeco is bigger internally for the same size as the Engel is externally.

I have a question regarding the controls and wiring. Do people fit the fridge in the cars with the control and therefore the wiring closest to the door or closest to the seats? Appears to me that you'd fit it closest to the door as you can change/view the controls easier but that would mean you'd have the wiring in the way...

                Hi

I am also interested if anyone has feedback about the ABR - Sidewinder fridges. They are 52 litres, 41 litre fridge and seperate 11 litre freezer.

From what I understand they use an Italian compressor which is apparently quiter than the Danfross compressors.

Would love to know if anyone has had any real life experience with them.

                thanks

                Anthony

I just visited Anaconda in Bayswater to collect my free water bottle, they sent me a coupon in the mail. Good scam as I left with a $999 Waeco fridge deal

I got the Waeco CF50 (the new version) for $999, complete with:

plus cap, bbq set, crockery set, travel bag etc.

They still have 6 left if anyone is interested.

The rattling fridge has been previously mentioned.
                    Especially on rough roads.
Somebody mentioned their Engel does it and nearly drove them mad.
My Waeco CF50 does it. Drives me mad too!
Pulled everything out, basket too, took off lid.
                    Still rattles.
Told by Waeco it's the spring mounted compressor - say it's "normal" :?: :!: But if I like I can take it to one of their authorised repairers for a check up. Yet to get around to it.
Have discovered though it's worse when the fridge is turned off. Less problem when its on.
At least its not the beers being shaken up.

Yep, not a peep out of my Engel so far. My father has one of the much older green lidded Engel jobbies, and that certainly gets a dongling noise happening sometimes.

When I went to pick up my Sidewinder air compressor, I had a look at the fridge. Visually I couldn't fault it, looks well made, it's just had a revision they're up to version 2 or 3, just little things, but thats what makes the difference between a good product and a great product!! The guy that I picked the compressor up from, actually has one of the prototipes. He loves it, doesn't miss a beat. He was taking it to a trade show that weekend, give you an idea of the quality if they are still using it as a demo.

Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

Okay my turn to play the "Which fridge is best" game. Our trusty old cooler has given up the ghost, we really cannot complain as it was one of the first of the 12VDC coolers ( Not fridge) on the market many years ago so I reckon we well and truely got our $79 worth out of it.

So now I am doing the rounds of the makers and I guess barring the cheap chinese imports on ebay it really comes down to Engel, Waeco, or Eva-Kool. So our basic needs are that it needs to live in the back of the Prado cause I am not lifting it in and out each time. I don't want it to take up a heap of room but I would like a 40 litre or more unit. I can pretty much forget the Alice Springs retailers as they are quite overpriced, I can buy from down south and get it shipped here for a couple of hundred less. I don't mind buying local but if a business down south and can ship it here for such a big price difference then someone is ripping the customer off here as the business down south are obviously still making their profit margin.

I am leaning towards the Eva-Kools at the moment and they have been given some good reports on here.

                              Decisions, decisions.

Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

                                Hey Mav,

I can't complain about our Waeco, although we did have to get a new thermostat a few months after we got it. It has run very well since though.

If you need extra space in the back, the Waeco probably has it over the Engel as it is narrower and taller, whereas the engel is lower and has a larger foot print. But... it makes the Waeco harder to get into. (60L that is)

So hope thats helped you out!

I can't comment on the eva-kools, but believe they run the same danfoss compressor as the Waeco.

                                Cheers,

                                Crammy
