I've got one of these, had it over a year, and I'm very pleased with it
    - even SWMBO doesn't mind it, but then maybe it's the company in the swag that keeps her happy

      Re: A Good Aussie Swag

      Hi Guys,

I am looking at getting a Mr. Swagman Delux swag, the question is do i go double or single. 99% of the time it will only be me, but I do like the idea of a bit extra room.

My delima is how much room am I really going to lose from the rear of the car, i dont have basket to put it in so it would have to go in the "boot".

Also I know I have read somewhere but cant seem to find it again. But the bottom of the swags are canvas and not the heavy duty plastic right?

      Thanks

      Jason

        Re: A Good Aussie Swag

        Hi Jasonh,

As I said above, I got the "classic" double swag, not the "deluxe", but I would think it would be basically the same size rolled up.

We had planned to take it on the PPGTG, in the car, sitting across on top of our other bags. I had trialled it in the car and confirmed that it did fit "straight across" the back seat. However, when packing for the trip, sitting it on top of other bags didn't work so well because the car gets narrower towards the roof. With a deal of effort I could get it to fit, but it only lasted one day in the car and then spent the next 4 weeks on the roof rack!

Fortunately we had purchased the canvas carry bag, which although it felt a bit steep at $100-odd at the time, it was worth it's weight in gold once the swag got hurled on the roof. Through rain (though only a little), dust and sand, the swag was still immaculate inside even after weeks of dusty roads.

The bottom of the swag is canvas. The carry bag also serves as a canvas ground sheet. We also use a "CGear" ground sheet which is basically a heavy duty double-layer shade cloth and is one of the best things I've ever owned.

        Cheers, longdog

          Re: A Good Aussie Swag

          Thanks for the info longdog,

I bit the bullet and have gone for the double, it was delivered this week/

Mark was happy to do the 10% discount for PP members still.

Just have to hope now I dont pack to much to get it in the back (or talk the wife into getting a rack)

          Thanks

          Jason

Something worth noting is that if you plan to use a swag in very cold night conditions, e.g. Simpson Desert crossing during winter months, or VIC high country during the winter months, the size of the swag matters.

One feature of the swag is to create a small amount of airspace that your own body heat warms up. So if you are using a swag for just one person, its actually wise to get a single swag and not a double. The reason being that a double swag will have too much air space, and so it's much harder to get warm for a single person in a double swag when it is very cold out.

And for the record, I bought a Burke & Wills Redgum. Very happy with the construction and quality of the product. Will expect many many years of use out of it.
