No - It's a fair way east of this (I had to look up a map to find out where the Brisbane Ranges are..)

But it is in a area of BIG hills (and scenic valleys like this)..

                  Too far south (actually SSE)

A bit far east - but getting warm

Bloody hell - how many more hints? Actually an important part of the history of this area (and the Victorian goldfields)

Now too far north - but not too far. Draw lines between all of the guesses and thats VERY close.

Actually a BIT of a link between Beechworth and the place in the photo - but then again perhaps everything in this region has a link with Beechworth.

I refuse to just own up - someone must know. Someone must have been there. With all the hints already given - surely I don't have to give the starting letter. And I want the place that the stone represents - not just the nearest town....

                            Yes - finally...

A memorial has been unveiled the Buckland Valley, near the Victorian town of Bright, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the violent Buckland Valley riots against more than 2,000 Chinese miners.

The memorial and interpretation story board have been erected by the Chinese Australian Family Historians of Victoria using a $13,500 Heritage Victoria grant.

The riots on Saturday, July 4, 1857, were an unprecedented outbreak of violence against the Chinese mining community, which had already been subject to discrimination during the Victorian gold rush.

Historical research shows that European miners drove more than 2,000 Chinese miners from the settlement. An unknown number of Chinese were robbed and killed while their camps and stores were also destroyed. Only four Chinese deaths were officially recognised by the authorities of the day.

Between 1857 and 1880, a Chinese cemetery was established at the site but burial records and evidence of the cemetery have since been lost.

Heritage Victoria, Executive Director, Ray Tonkin says the memorial will identify the old cemetery and provide a place to reflect and pay respect to the district’s early Chinese pioneers.

I also seem to recall that at the site it said that possibly 4000 Chinese were buried here - sounds a lot to me (memory failing) - but there was certainly a lot...

Certainly a pretty place at the moment - the fairly easy 4WD track to Harrietville had some great views of the mountains. A recommended drive.

                            Over to you Fishfinder...
