A lot of terms will vary from state to state just to confuse things more

You've got like a 1 in 10 chance of someone with an accent like mine being from New Zealand and thats your choice?
It took me a while to drop my Africanisms when I went to England, and the same for English to dialect and its very

    Takkies vs Trainers vs Runners
Baakie vs pick up vs Ute
    brookies vs shorts vs ruggers/boardies
    Pepper vs Capsicum
    Courgette vs Zucchini
    Aubergine vs Egg Plant

    Still can't say Doona though

I dated a Canadian for a while, and got attuned to the accent so I am always surprised when Canadians get confused for Americans. Its the same for NZ/Aus I suppose? If you know the accent, its obvious if you don't. I was told they ask Aussies if they're from New Zealand because Kiwis don't mind being mistaken for Aussies, but Aussies hate being called Kiwi.

I know that feeling! I live in a constant state of confusion. When I lived in the states, I used all my Australian terms until it worked it's way out of my system. Now that I'm back in Australia, after 5 years I was nearly vack into the swing of the Australian slang/terms again until the fella I subcontract for hired a fresh American and I work with him constantly and since it was just easier to communicate with him in his own language, Ive slipped straight back into the Midwest accent and terms and completely confused my wife who isnt used to them at all!

The classic was still the guy who was convinced I was from the Middle East. The logic there really caught be by surprise. But he was Minnesota. Lol

Everyone knows Aussies can't spell. Comes from too much time in the sun playing sport instead of paying attention at school.

I always thought Pom was short for pome, prisoner of mother England.

We don't actually have our own terms, we just borrow some from the Brits, some from the Yanks.

we do have our own language
unfortunately we are seeing less of it used.
it may have originally come from the brit influence but we fixed it.
pom is one of our words
    should be spelt POHM
    Prisoner Of Her Majesty

I don't know a West Aussie that would call it a saloon, silencer or paraffin unless he was a Pom.
We are all different with our words
