I take a decent stubbie cooler to protect my hand from the cold, other than that, my usually anti social appearance keeps most people away. If there are a bunch of young louts in a camp I will generally find another spot if with the family, depending on where we go I take the dogs too, they keep most animals away, and make a fair old racket when they hear/sniff something sneaking around at night, they are both rifle proof, so fireworks don't upset them. I definately don't take any weapons out bush unless hunting, and even then If we are camped, they are broken down and locked in their cases in the back of the car. My opinion is if you run into a bit of strife, the worst possible thing you can do is produce a firearm, the situation then elevates to a level way over most peoples heads, best avoided when out with your loved ones.

Interesting how the people in the south of the country are worried about other people, whereas the folks in the North are worried about pigs, dingoes, crocs, and buffalo. Most of those things you cant talk you way out of.

I think a lot of that is the proximity to big cities and the sheer numbers of people out in certain areas, round here it's actually pretty good, 99% of the people you encounter are the kind that will come over, say gidday and spend the night sitting round the fire over a few cans. The other 1% are mainly people who will give a polite wave, but keep to themselves. Maybe once a year you encounter a bunch of dickheads.
As far as animals go, there are a few wild dogs around but pretty safe out really

Is it just me or this the most ridiculous tread on the website?

We bang on about looking after the bush, treading lightly, helping other 4wders in need, so on and so on, but we want to go out in the bush with guns, and baseball bats and razor steel just in case someone with a big mouths punchy.....get a friggin life.

If I see you in the bush bogged up to your side steps I might keep driving in case I get shot!

I appreciate that some people have found themselves in unfortanate situations, and I hope my family and I are never in that situation, but taking guns camping.....gimme a break!

The reality is that it is very safe and you have more chances of hurting yourself than being hurt by someone else, or even an animal. I repeat my original post.

Indeed, there have also been many tragic accidents resulting from others being injured accidentally from weapons that were there 'just in case'.

Fortunately in Australia, the few examples where someone has experienced a bad situation, or been faced with a really serious threat, are actually very rare. As previously indicated, you have greater odds of coming across a lunatic in an urban environment rather than while 4wd'ing or camping out bush.

Australia is very safe - despite all the venomous snakes, etc., and reported incidents such as the Lees/Falconio (NT) case and the Schwab murders (NT/WA).

You can't live life worrying about what might happen. If you did, you would never leave home. Rather, be safe and wherever possible, try to avoid placing yourself in a situation where trouble might occur. If a bunch of lunatics arrive near your campsite, and unless you are in company with others, it may be wise to just move on and let them have their way rather than to remain and face a possible situation that might threaten yourself or your family.

Despite the urge... it never pays to try and take the law into your own hands or retaliate unless absolutely necessary... leave this for the police.
