  • Anyone cancelling their ordered D4D Prado?

In the light of the death rattle issue with D4D equipped Hiluxes and Prados, are there any folks on this forum waiting on their yet to be delivered Prado D4D who are now considering cancelling their orders?

Are there any assurances from the dealers that this problem is going to be resolved?

Or are the sales people putting on the genuinely surprised face and saying that they've never heard of it before?

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the "death rattle issue"? Are you talking about Diesel Engine rattle on cold start? (http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=3107).

      Yes, that's correct.

I am wondering whether Toyota's backlog of D4Ds in Hiluxes and Prados have now suddenly become a surplus due to cancellation of orders.

Even though I own a D4D that has the injector problem I somehow doubt that anyone who has ordered a D4D will be cancelling their order.

As far as I know there is no surplus of D4D's at the moment.

          Cancelling D4Ds?

Are these engines this bad? How many have got these nasty noises as a percentage of how many have been delivered? There seems to be many hundreds on the road and they can't all have problems surely.
I'm in the market for a late model Prado or maybe if the cook will let me, a new one.
Thinking of all the pots and pans I'll have to wash and grovelling I'll have to do, maybe I should just settle for a used vehicle.
I look forward to your replies on this as it'll help me make up my mind.
          Thanks.
          Alan.

There's a long onging, evolving thread in another part of this forum, which goes into detail about this problem.

            http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=3107

I have been so hanging out to buying a D4D Prado but now I'm not so sure. I'll reassess the situation once I know what the official fix is.

I tend to buy a vehicle and keep it for a long time. It really doesn't make sense now for me now to consider a serioualy flawed product from Toyota. I think that the rattles in the morning will significantly diminish the long term reliability of the engine.

mate you dont really get the picture,

its not a deathly fault for the prado. i own a D4D and have the rattle in the morning when its cold. ive had it for nearly a year and no problems have evolved. you would be quite silly to cancel an order just because of a noise that lasts about a minute or two.

Still waiting to place an order after all this time Lawrance  ? We too have a D4D with the cold morning rattle. Would I give it up and get something different? Not on your nelly! Nothing will ever be perfect. What are you waiting for? Go and place the order, you won't be sorry.

Yeah, the rattle is definitely there for me too. It's the only issue with it so far (9000 k's). Some mornings I can hardly hear it at all. Other mornings, like this morning it's a bit chunkier.

I will be extremely surprised if Toyota do not come to the party for current owners when a fix is finally worked out. It will also be interesting how the problem goes now that we are moving out of winter.

The price of diesel is a factor. If it goes up around $2.00 / L again then diesels really don't look too good. Damn good motor though, for a 4 cyl diesel they are the goods.

This could be good news for you Lawrence.

You will be able to buy a Prado at a reduced rate if they have heaps sitting around

Hehehe! I'm just biding my time.

My current 4x4, a fairly modded Land Rover DII goes places a Prado will struggle through but I suspect my days of "weekend warrior" mud and bog hole driving have waned. I've become much more interested in general touring and seeing the great Outback, and so the V8 Discovery which I've custom tailored to my earlier needs no longer seems to fit my requirements too well.

The Prado seems to fit the bill better, primarily because of the torquey, fuel efficient diesel and standard long range tanks.

I was so set on the D4D but I remember the days when the Nissan Patrol first rolled out with the ZD30 TD which had more power and torque than the old 4.2 TD and yet more fuel efficient. I was considering buying one until the stories of holed pistons starting to appear. I'm sorry for the owners who were the early adopters as they really copped horrible depreciation and/or blown motors.

I feel that the Japanese diesel motor skills are still not up to European standards yet. Looking at the Discovery 3, it's excellent TDV6 motor is still powering along and no problems to date.

I'll know soon whether the D4D is right once I hear of Toyota's fix for this problem. And I hope its not a bandaid fix but a proper one.
