Re: WARNING Keep Your Prado Safe

I don't know if it is getting any worse but I have heard of things being knock off and damaged from 4wds for many years. Some of them are just acts of sheer vandalism and bastardry.

As this is an open forum, I don't want to itemize things on here as it may give those scumbag ideas, but unfortunately I would go as far to say that most of the security devices for spotlights, wheels, roofracks, aerials and vehicles aren't much of a deterrent if they really want to get or damage stuff :x

Caution! Being security conscious and inquisitive about all things PRADO, I was thinking I would try the CAMRY key in the spare wheel lock. Sure enough with out to much trouble
the lock opened, To leave who ever was inclined to easily remove around $1200 worth of wheel S H * T!

I just had to go outside and try the ECHO key on the spare wheel lock - only slightly relieved that it didn't work.
but I'll have a try on a few other Prado's and see what happens.

Has anyone any recommendations regarding good quality wheel locking nuts or other "deterrants". I'm not keen on taking care of Trunk Monkeys and the like but I am willing to invest some dollars in additional layers of security . Every layer makes it harder to get at something valuable and makes it more likely that thieves will move on to easier pickings.

Re: WARNING Keep Your Prado Safe

Wheel lock-nuts will only stop the opportunistic or impulsive thieves. However, this is the same as your front door locks on your house. To the best of my knowledge I haven't seen or heard of any that can't be removed very easily with some basic tools.

i am not saying don't use them if you park in dodgy areas, as they are a good deterant over the prado parked 2 cars away with none. i guess the best bet is to be insured.

Any set that offers a unique key set to release are OK either check with your tyre dealer or a reputable auto shop.

Re: WARNING Keep Your Prado Safe

Whenever you drive / own a popular make, it also becomes a popular target for thieves.

I wonder how many Ssanyong Korando owners get their spare wheels stolen. I wager probably proportinately very few.

Goes to show that a Prado is desirable, even by unscrupulous parties. ops:

I had someone try to lever my spare wheel off my Honda CRV a couple of years ago - It had a hard wheel cover on but was only a steel wheel (other 4 wheels were Honda optioned alloys with lockable wheel nuts) - when they noticed this they obviously abandoned their efforts. This was in the outdoor carpark of a shopping mall in Castle Hill in the middle of the day. They managed to A, break the wheel cover and B, put a big gouge in my back door where they tried to lever the wheel off the car.

Trunk Monkey is starting to look attractive. Besides, for the S & W to be effective you have to be there. The scumbags usually prefer to do their thing when no-one's around. :|
