We recently bought a Waeco fridge. Any advice for storage when not in use (ie. Leave lid closed or open)? Do they get smelly or mouldy?
Cheers

I suggest leaving it in the back of my Prado, I will drive by tomorrow to take care of the storage solution for you.
On a serious note I will be interested in what owners have to say cause we are about to get a fridge for the back of the Prado.

Nice try!
Mr Fishnut did try to convince me that it should stay in the back of the Prado (that he drives to uni) filled with beer....as a test to check that it mainatains temp etc!!!
If you're not the lead dog the view never changes!
I use mine at home, it is currently a freezer sitting happily at -20.
But when I dont use it in the car or as the summer beer fridge (October thru April) I clean it out with "vanilla wipe" and then leave the lid very slightly ajar for ventilation.
We leave our fridge with its lid off, after giving it a quick clean and dry. Can be several months between uses, dont want to risk it getting mouldy as once the mould is in there you cant kill it.
Make sure you give it a run every now and again to keep everything lubricated etc in the coolent path.
Also I wipe it out with some real vanilla and leave it slightly ajar
cheers

Sounds like a very good scientific experiment, one that is both observational and participational in its make up. Of course my theory may be flawed as I have had 4 very large bourbon & cokes.

After you've drank all the beers and let the fridge warm up to around ambient (reduces the amount of condensation), give the insides a good clean then leave the lid slightly ajar. I just stick a rag in under the lid to keep a small air gap. They do get stinky if you leave the lid shut.
I just wipe it out so no moisture is left behind, never lock it when it is not plugged in, & usually put something small under the lid to keep it just cracked. Yes the will start to smell if left completely closed.
I have had mine for almost 10 years now.

When I bought my 40L Engel a few months back, the Engel info that came with it says that it's actually better to leave the fridge plugged in at home for use as a 2nd fridge. Rather than leaving it sitting without being used. Guy at the BCF store I bought it from also said the same thing. Can't say I've had it plugged in at home up until this point as I really don't need another fridge at home right now. Just leave it with a clothes peg holding the lid up slightly. With all fridges in the past,If you leave them closed they start to get up a good smell. Definitely leave them open just a crack as the guys all say.

In the Summer months I just leave it in the car cause it is just so handy - ie storing the ice cream and other frozen groceries in the car whilst you do your other shopping.
But during the winter it sits on a shelf in the garage, lid removed.

It's the same as any device with gas/refridgerant in it (household fridge, car aircon, etc). It's always recommended to use them on a regular basis.
Personally my engel is only ever turned off for the short walk between the house (where it's used as the bar fridge), and the car (where it's used as the bar fridge - oh and some food occasionally too). So it's barely been turned off in the last 4 years or so.
