Satellite Internet Problems?

We've been having ongoing problems with our satellite connection for years. But in the last few weeks it has got really bad; with no connection at all for 90% of the time. Our ISP does not answer or return my calls! :evil: :evil: And when, on the odd occasion we are connected, it tends to be very slow. Unless we get a fix very soon, I'll be going back to dial up.

Wondering if anyone else is having trouble with their satellite internet :?:

Don't know about satellite but I have a mate in the bush who got some great plan from Telstra to upgrade his satellite to NextG. He says it works like a gem compared to sat.

If they dont return your calls then lodge a complaint with the telecommunications ombudsman.

That's an option we are considering too!

If they dont return your calls then lodge a complaint with the telecommunications ombudsman.

I finally went that road. The ombudsman was very little help ... give the provider another 10 days, then if there is NO response at all from them, contact ombudsman again ... then expect it to take 10 WEEKS to follow up the complaint.

On the positive side, the wife got a call from the ISP today, to the effect that there has been a lot of people with problems and they have been systematically working their way thru. Bit late :twisted:

Better post this before connection drops out again :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

The ombudsman has been very helpful when I have had issues. Even got me a 5 figure sum back from Telstra when they broke the rules they set themselves..

There has been some high level noise around for about 6 weeks or so but nothing that should effect any of the low geosync comms satellites or that should reduce a connection by 90%.

are you on complete satellite or download only ?

I haven't had any issues over the last couple of months, over the last 3 days I have had a +75% signal thru Mt Isa, Charlieville, Dalby and came thru your way late yesterday, even with the heavy rain/electrical storms down south it was still able to keep a decent connection.

Sounds like it's time to change your ISP ? If you are in contract you should be able to get out of it under the Acceptable Use Policy, if they are not keeping up their side of the contract.

As much as I dislike Telstra I moved to their mobile card when I had enough of my Vodafone card (for laptop - used when I see clients out of the office). The nextG wireless card works a treat! Used it on my trip to longreach last year and when you park up for the night at most towns I had full service and it went like a rocket!

TP, the ombudsman may be helpful, but when you rely on the net as we do, a ten week lag to act renders the service useless to us. Its not just about getting money out of the ISP, its needing to be connected and having a reliable connection.

Spurio, from the sounds of it, the problem must be with the ISP ... And the satellite is the only connection we have - no dialup backup ... there has been NO connection whatsoever for a couple of weeks. Its funny; using my uni account, I emailed them a copy of the log i've been keeping for the last 18 months and "all of a sudden" we have connection back. Makes we wonder what has been going on! :x :x

Metro99, the next time we have even a hint of trouble i'll try NextG ... or sooner. NextG might work, but we have a NextG phone and only limited access, otherwise we would have gone that way already - seems we are just in a dead spot. Within the boundaries of Toowoomba City.

I have a couple of customers using remote telemetry broadcasting on NextG near Brigalow.

If you have at least one bar reception on your phone you should be right with a stationary setup. You can get an amp'ed fixed aerial for your house (looks like a UHF TV aerial) which increases your reception. I think for one offs they are about $250 completely installed, talk to telstra before you sign any thing. You might be able to get them to throw one in your deal for free.

Unfortunately they have many in rural and regional centres by the short and curlies :x

I have always thought telstra provides its best service to ex-customers trying to win them back

But use them for what you can get, be careful the cost of the aerial is not included in the run on plan after the trial ends. i.e. it might be cheaper to say No thanks and a week later get it installed (tricky bastards) and do some calcs over the contract periods.

I think a number of satellite ISPs have a great thing going under the federal government funding. :roll:

At certain times of the year solar flare activity can affect Satellite comms in a big way. I am not sure if there have been any in the past few weeks though. they have been known to totally shutdown a satellite in response to an expected solar flare event.

Coincidentally... there is also a partial solar eclipse occuring this afternoon just prior to sunset :shock:

Bear - if you were with Go Bush, apparently they went bust last week owing their satellite provider around $2 M.

I changed from satellite to Wireless 3G last year and have never looked back. About a tenth of the latency and five times download speed for around the same price.

Not so good if you're not in a 3G coverage area of course
