Here Here, Iron Paww - Nicely said

Unfortunately there are always going to be those people who think they are above everyone else and can drive how they want. If those people had been parented accordingly when they were growing up, I believe they would respect the road and others - a lot more.

        Re: Speed Limits

        Well said Iron paw

Having come back from trip up north in humble opinion & from experience and things I witnessed

A maximum speed of 120 would be useful in WA for the major hwys once onto the flatter open roads

The down side to this you have to keep your eye out for movement I had a wandering bovine decide to walk out in front of me whilst doing 100kmph as I crossed over bridge with another oncoming 4wd at the same time - brake test time if I had been doing anymore doubt I'd be typing this message due to the sudden stop and this was 1030 am when I would never have expected it

The other gripe is the caravans typically travel at 70 to 80 whilst I and road trains sit closer to 100 - if they have a faster moving vehicle approaching surely the decent thing to do is pull over and let it pass safely.

It also makes me wonder when a oversize load requests a vehicle move off the road because its traveling slower than the oversize load :!:

          Re: Speed Limits

I reckon that speed limits should be raised heaps. For me anyway, and maybe a couple of you lot too.

But sadly I have seen johnny up the street drive and its not pretty. And whats worse is I know that johnny has lots of mates that drive just like johnny. They are hopeless.
I really dont want them travelling towards my kids when mum is driving the prado at anything over the speed limits that we have already.

But I dont think they will raise them just for me and a few of you lot. So lets keep em low and remember - if you can go faster so can johnny. Do you really want johnny coming at you any quicker than he does now

Looks like NT will re-introduce open speed limits on some of their highways in 2013.

Happy with 120 on most Hwys however can see the logic of some higher speeds such as 130 in outback NT and WA for example.

No worries. Just curious, are there any 120kph speed limit areas in Victoria? Or in any other State for that matter?

In Vic, you get lots of 100, and some good stretches on the Hume and Princess of 110. Generally these parts are split carriage way with two lanes. I can't think of any 120 that I've come across.

I mention 120, since when in the NT earlier this year I found this a good speed to sit on in the 130 areas. A loaded 4wd at 130 didn't feel great to me. But I'd imagine you get used to it, and if you're in a road car 130 would be fine.

BTW - I generally only drive at 100-110kph in the Prado with the family on board to maximise fuel efficiency and range.

I think there are 2 main factors why road tolls per capita are high in Australia... none of them to do with speed, although speed in the wrong conditions will definitely make any accident more likely or end with worse consequences.

Firstly, road conditions in Australia are the worst I have ever seen... I'm not talking country roads, but mainly metro road areas. I find it hard to believe these roads are in a 1st world country.

Secondly, and most importantly in my opinion, the driving standards of your average Australian driver is disgraceful. Without doubt the worst I have ever seen... and I have driven in Africa. It's not really fair to point at any individual. As Australians we are taught to drive by our parents, mates etc. If we were learning in Europe we would spend many thousands of dollars and have professional lessons from the start until we took our driving tests (which would be much harder to complete than the one we get here in Australia). They drive considerably faster and have less road deaths per capita... enough said.

In an ideal world were everyone has enough common sense and driving skill, and our roads are built and maintained to a decent standard, then we would not need any speed limits on any roads, as we would all know what a safe speed would be for the given conditions. Sadly humans can't be trusted to use common sense.

the problem i see travelling around our cities & country is
most people learn to drive at 20 to 50kph due to speed zones and the kids dont want to get caught
they maybe sometimes get up to 80 then 100kph if they live near a stretch of road that has higher speed limits
then they get their licence and try to drive at the 110kph on their own
they can't work out distances from the on coming traffic when over taking and they are too scared to go over the speed limit to make the pass effective !
don't let me start on the ones that cant speak English, can they read English ????
when we drive in the country you get a lot of people that are:: not comfortable with the speed, towing something ( they have a different speed limit set) or simply out on a Sunday drive that don't drive at or close to the speed limit, this makes it hard for the people that want to or need to drive at the limit set to get to their destination on time
there should be an acceptance of an overtaking another vehicle at speed by the police, not have them sit at exactly that position to book you
how to you over take someone doing 90 and tying to watch your speedo so you only do 100 and that takes you nearly 2km to pass with the chance of oncoming traffic as there are very fee overtaking lanes or double lane roads

our country roads in SA are rubbish, you sit on the limit from Pt Augusta up to the NT border and the scrub is right there on the side of the road, when you hit the NT border there is a dramatic change to road conditions to the point there is almost 2 or 3 car widths scrub cleared from the side of the road and it make the travelling much easier to sit on the 130 to 150kph as there are no distractions of having to watch for wild life as they are much easier to see !!
i drove my Subaru liberty at 140kph most of the way from Alice to Cooberpedy as the roads are flowing and are speed ca

not to mention that the roads are rubbish to begin with we have 2.5m trucks, caravans, trailers, etc and we get to drive on a 3m strip of bitumen that has the edges breaking away
i have driven on dirt roads better than some of out highways

the next issue is the way we are treated as criminals just having to drive to work, there are camera's everywhere now
i hear of people getting done for 61, 62, 63 in a 60 zone when every car i own has a speedo that is NOT accurate!!
so that make every one drive slower than the limit, so when the revenue drops as we stop speeding they drop the limit lower to 40kph and have multiple speed zones on the one stretch of road, what a joke

i go to the US every couple of years for work and their police only pick up people doing stupid things in traffic
( i was doing 65 being passed by a granny doing 80 in a 65 zone passed a cop, and i was the slowest one on the road!!)
if the speed limit is 65mph and the flow is 80mph their not pulling you over, their cameras have to be placed in an open area, have signs 100m before & after
otherwise they get done for entrapment !!!, then they have the car pool lanes and they are much faster
on their inter city highways they have a 85mph limit but most sit on 90 to 95
and yes they have traffic jams, but people let you in and their on ramps have stop & go signals to let 2 cars at a time enter and that keeps the flow of traffic
i am yet to see an accident over there

how many times have you sat on 100 or 110kph then had to slow to 50kph for a small town and it feels like your walking?

i will say this as loud as possible !!
if everyone stopped speeding for 1 week the government would panic as it would run out of money
i we all didnt buy fuel for 1 week the country would stop for the loss of tax it collects
