The very same cameras are making an appearance here in SA too.

We elect governments to provide the services we all need and use. How about they start spending the money that is collected from us to maintain all roads instead of spending it on buying extra speed cameras. There needs to be a tougher stance on obtaining a license whereby it is mandated that everyone undertake 2 - 5 defensive driving lessons as well as only being instructed by a trained professional. That way there will be no more bad 'mum & dad' habits picked up by new drivers.

I realise the extra cost may be prohibitive, but I would rather pay that bill than a bill for a funeral director for one of my kids or the wife due to some idiot that thinks a little water on the road is a good excuse to test the laws of adhesion with their rear tyres. If we had properly maintained roads, better driver training and a police force that was empowered to and interested in stamping out the multitude of bad driving habits that are exhibited every day on suburban roads, maybe then we could get the speed limits on country roads lifted. Hey, if it can work in European countries with unrestricted limits, surely an increase to 130kph will work in Australia.

My longest post to date also happens to be post #500 for me.

When I was living in the nt, travelling over to qld for holidays etc, the open speed limit was a godsend, I regularly used to travel between 150-170 kph. I actually used to get brilliant fuel economy which surprised the hell out of me, au ford back in 2003 running standard unleaded and was getting 970 before I needed to fill up. The k's just flew by and never felt fatigued. Did the same trip after the 130kph speed limit came in diff car that didn't like the speed and by Christ did I get tired.

Higher speed, shorter driving time, less fatigue.

              Speed is not a killer...

The following are a killer on the Australian roads:-
              - old people driving who shouldn't be on the road
              - young "P" plater's
              - drunk drivers who can't control their drink and says "I'm OK to drive, I've only had a few"
              - joy riders
              - tourist who thinks they can do anything because they don't live here
              - female's
              - males who wears DT's (dick togs, swimmers etc.)
              - Nissan drivers
              - stupid Kangaroos
              - people who are talking about increasing the speed limit to 120 km (if you are going to increase the limit it should be under the drivers discretion)
The list goes on... unfortunately I have to drive my Black Mamba to town.

A famous race car driver ( Mr P Perfect) once said on a TV interview that speed itself does not kill, but the irresponsible use of speed will.

As others on PP i travel all over this great brown land with trailer in tow and normally do a consistent 100 kph for relaxed travel and costs. On a resent trip in NT we had one of our cars fail and needed to drive the a fair distance for phone service to arrange towing and repairs. As it was mid afternoon we dropped my trailer and did the 130 KPH speed limit until we had phone service. The roads in NT are usually flat, wide and in good condition so 130 KPH was not over the top. We could have driven a lot faster if we needed to.
Try doing 130 KPH around the Kenilworth area with blind corners etc and yes, speed will kill.

So why is WA limited to 100 KPH when towing? So the grey nomads don't go mad and kill all of the rest of us.

                My 3.6 cents worth.

                Rusty.

Sad quote considering the circumstances of his demise.

Agreed. Too much speed for the conditions = disaster. Even for the best drivers, this was my point.
