I'm too close for comfort to the Kinglake fires. If the wind changes we're out of here

We're still here, but I can't say the same for a lot of the district. Most of the 4wd tracks I regularly use are gone. Although I'm not complaining, it could have been a lot worse.

            Re: Victorian bush fires

Yes, houses can be replaced lives cant.... too true...

Maybe now the Vic Housing Builders association ( or whom ever authorises building codes ) may re-think about the structure of Vic houses...
Yes, the jiprock, for insulation may be good, but as a fire retardant, well pictures speak for them selves...
If it was double brick, rendered walls and plaster like here over in the west, then at least the structure is rebuildable depending on damage. Hell you
will lose your roof, but atleast you have a chance of claiming something back....

I have cousins in Sunbury, it is very close to them apparently... I hope they are ok..

              Re: Victorian bush fires

I saw the news footage this morning... and was stunned. The images were taken by a chopper flying overhead, and it looked like a bomb had been let off in the towns. Houses all over were literally razed to the ground. The loss of life will, tragically, climb higher.

It makes you realise just how dangerous bush fires can be.

I, too, hope that no-one has lost friends or family, and pray for those that have. I'm stilled stunned by the news and footage.

                  Re: Victorian bush fires

It's images like that D4D that make you realise just how bad a fire maelstrom it was and just how furious these fires can be. Hell on Earth!

I hope you are no longer under threat D4D.

Fortunately we only really have cyclones to worry about up here in the tropics. Having lived through Cyclone Tracy, I have no fear in sending my family down South out of harms way if we were ever under immediate threat of a serious one. Sadly, you don't get as much advanced warning from these wild fires.

                    Re: Victorian bush fires

Thanks for your concern. We're not in the threat area at the moment and due to the predicted S/SW winds this week we shouldn't be. We have a 100klm fire front now from the north to the north east.

I'm sitting, with the family, watching the horrifying news footage as wildfires rip through huge stretches of Victoria.

I was looking at the locations of D4D and many other Victorian PP'ers and all I can say is ... we wish you all well and pray that you remain safe.

                      Best wishes.

                          Re: Victorian bush fires

Yes, such an awful tragedy. I was sitting with my young son watching the news this morning and wondered exactly what I would do, faced with similar circumstances, would I stay or flee. I'd have to say, I'd run. I could not imagine anything more terrifying than facing some of the fire front shown on TV.

I am not a religious person by any stretch, but after seeing what has happened a prayer to whoever you believe in may be in order for those that have lost everything and then some.

So guys, if you're there, in the thick of it. Stay safe and don't leave it too late.

We live in such a land of contrasts. Only last Thursday I put together two teams of SES guys from our area to send up north (QLD) to tropical downpours and flooding.

I think 2009 looks set to be one of those years....
