I've got bad feelings about this tour. Guess I just remember Glenn McGrath's injury being the harbinger of death the last time we were over there. Now with Brett Lee out right before the first match. Ricky Ponting is a superb batsman but not a good captain at all in my opinion. He just doesn't seem to have a head for cricket tactics. McGrath and Warne etc covered this when they were around, but now they aren't and tactics needs to play a much bigger hand. I'm not sure he's up to it. But I live in hope........

Pretty much my opinion as well and I have been saying it for a longtime, I am not sure there is a viable alternative though

I'm a big fan of Ponting, but unfortunately, I agree too. He just never seems to know the 'right' time to change tactics. I'm just an armchair expert who rolls an arm over in an old bastards league, but it seems that he persists with tactics that don't work for way too many overs...hours.... Perhaps safe when McGrath was just bowling perfect L&L, but now they just leak runs for no wickets...
My optimistic vote yesterday might have to change after day 1  !
I've gone for the Poms just, I'm sorry to say. I just feel that Ponting doesn't have his finger on the pulse to make the vital changes when they are needed. After watching last night, 7 wickets with a number being handed to us with play ons, I'm not convinved we'll have the bowling ability to pull it off. And we desperately need a quailty spinner, Hauritz is useless!
I mean geezus - did anyone notice what the pitch looked like last night after just one day! There is gonna be nothing left of it after 3! Get your act together Mr Curator!

Campfire thread is for exactly these types of discussions. Isn't it?
For Oz to win the ashes I think everything needs to go well for us. That is, our batters need to get a few decent totals, our bowlers need to remove a few heavy scoring batters cheaply each innings. We seem to have real difficulty getting our opposition out for under 300 these days. That's fine if our batters are up to the task but makes the game a lot more difficult to win.
Lets see em all out for 200 odd. Lets see 300 plus in our own innings. Then I'll be more confident.

Actually I think I'm hooked on the cricket and The Ashes. I sat with some of the GTG attendees at Yalaru and in a bar on Saturday night watching it and trying to pick up on the rules.
Ian and QLD Matt promised to play up a pick up match with me and some of you when I make it back down there again.....I can't wait.

Sorry to hear about the Ashes loss. At least you only have to wait 2 years as opposed to the 3 we have to wait for the Americas Cup.
