Just thought I would make everyone aware that their are some extremly dodgy mechanics getting around out there....
Heres my story..... After speaking to a fellow PP'er it was bought to my attention that the mechanics (a toyota one) wasnt doing their job properly. This other PP'er put their prado in there for a service only to get it back with black oil which hadnt been changed and when he bought it to their attention they say that they must have missed it while doing the service and that they would call him up to organise a time to bring it in, but they never called so he ended up changing the oil himself.
When I got my 20,000km a few weeks back I insisted that I check my oil before paying because I wasnt going to pay for its service if they hadnt changed the oil. Well my oil was very black with just a slight tinge of brown, obviously they only topped my oil up. I then mentioned it to them and had them all basically bullied me and try make me feel like an idiot by getting at least 7 people from there tell me that diesel oil goes black the second a motor is started and that is why my oil was so black. I may be a female but I'm not stupid.... I knew what they said wasnt correct as my partner and I own a truck and the oil in the truck is never black, not even when its due for a service. But I paid anyway and left there and planned to go elsewhere (but didnt tell them that). Then today.... I was driving home, I turned into a street mine is off and this group of people abused me, I was like "Hmmmmm whats their problem" anyway, I went back out not long after and they did it again, and then a few minutes later when I was heading home again they did it again so I stopped and asked them what the hell their problem was, because by this point I was furious as I had done nothing wrong. They all started abusing me saying that I was flying around corners and going really fast, I was like "I would have been lucky to be doing 20km and that my tyres are noisy so it probably sounds like I'm going fast" but they continued on abusing me and I had pretty nasty words to them before driving off when one of the guys (I knew I'd seen him somewhere before) said "Just wait until next time I service you car" In my mind only means 1 thing, he works at the mechanics where I take my car and plans on doing something to it next time I put it in for a service. Just goes to show that you cant trust all mechanics, and definetely cant trust the ones with "Toyota" in their name because you never know what they're capable of. I will be taking my Prado elsewhere from now on but if I get the same service as I've been getting from there I'll be going back to my old mechanic....

Hmm, that all-round experience sounds a tad menacing to me. Is this an actual Toyota agent??? If so I'd be taking it up with Toyota itself. Pressure from "upstairs" might make them think twice about their after-hours menacing behaviour (not to mention dodgy servicing activity). Especially as their employees are so close to your neighbourhood.

Hope you at least find an alternative honest service outlet. Most independent operators that have been around for a while & have extensive loyal clientele are generally honest & reliable. Even if they work out a little dearer it's worth paying a bit of a premium for that piece of mind I reckon.

      Good luck,

Wow bad experience with possible revenge

I always mark the components that should be changed with a service with my name or date. Oil filters, air filters have even placed a telltale over the sump plug (bit hard to mark oil).

I have had quite a few complementary services due to this, hopefully I have not been revenged

This has not been isolated to any particular dealer or brand (Ford, Holden, Toyota never had a Pissan or Bitsmissing)

Bit disappointing when you pay a premium service cost.

Wonder if this will happen with my fixed price servicing for the next 3 years?

It sure is! I have just finished filling out an online feedback form on the toyota website, hopefully it gets to the right person who actually takes some action to it. Its ridiculous that we spend all this money on decent cars, (we all know our Prado's arent cheap to buy) and then we put them in to get serviced thru Toyota yet we still dont get a good quality service. If I wasnt sorry worried about breaking a nail I'd service my Prado myself.  At least then I know its done....

Well, you'd likely get a little oil under the nails! Hey, you could always wear black nail polish to disguise it, would colour match your Prado!

You sound like a good sport & I see you drive a manual too. Must be a little bit of an adventurous streak beneath that mild receptionist exterior  Methinks you could potentially be on a winner by establishing a female-friendly service point for fellow Prado chicks!

            Cheers,

Funny you should say that... I always wear dark nail polish for that reason. Between 4x4ing, helping the other half work on our boat and other 'boy' things my nails get pretty discoloured hence having to wear such a dark colour.

Heh, my Wife's given up on nail polish... in fact she's given up on nails altogether Can't complain though: she loves doing the mowing, putting the rubbish out, pruning the trees. Now if I could only get her onto those oil changes...

That is really really bad for a dealer :x , More people are surely also complaining about their non existent service, I would make a complaint about that mechanic threatening damage as well ...the hide of some people :x
I have 235K on my Prado and I have had nothing but the best of service from my Toyota dealer
at the 110k service they forgot the oil filter (i use synthetic oils so it gets changed every time) and they said dont bother taking the carthat afternoon, they gave me the keys of a Kluger off the showroom floor and said it will be fixed by the next day along with detail and fuel card, keep the kluger as long as you need.

I did get terrible service from a local Toyota a few years ago, I am not one to let things lie , but nothing was done about them and they are a BIG toyota shop too....... Didnt even lift the bonnet let alone change or check anything for a supposed 80K Diesel service ended up needing a new 3.0 diesel motor for my hilux

Always check your car before leaving the service........

Had similar experience with local dealer with fixed price service. Will be marking bits for next service and will let you know. Opted not to say anything this time. Was no way filters were changed.......I am sure new ones dont come with mud stains on them.

                        Re: Dodgy Servicing

Well, straight to the dealer principal, and a letter to Toyota Australia. If that was me I'd be demanding what the Dealer Principal was going to do about my being threatened by his staff. (1) the car wasn't serviced properly, (2) the staff bullied you, (3) the staff lied to you, (4) you were threatened by a member of staff. I'd be asking for one good reason why your car, or anyone else's car should go within shooting distance of that dealership.

If the required services have not been completed, then I certainly wouldn't be paying. If that brings the Toyota Heavies down on top of me then so be it! There is no law saying I must pay for crap! A call to Consumer Affairs (or equivalent) wouldn't go astray either so you know how to lean on them next time you approach them.

I always try to mark oil filters, reservoirs etc as well.

For that particular dealership, the hell with them, and so let it be known to all!

Sounds like a good idea if you were happy with his work previously

I would definitely follow Iron-Paww's suggestion & get some letters on the go with copies to your states Fair Trading Dept. & your solicitor as well. Sometimes a stat dec can come in handy too  (check with your solicitor).

When I was in the auto air conditioning game I worked for a couple of auto air specialists plus Holden & Mitsubishi dealers. The latter was great, good team of guys & service manager/advisors. The Holden dealer, well it was    big time. Eventually went out of business of course  Those other specialist companies I was with used to do business with lots of car & truck dealerships & I can assure you that there were some shonky ones out there :!: This was a long time ago & unfortunately nothing has seemingly changed. The trick of course is to find the good ones.

Anyway I hope that things work out for you, the actions of that Toyota dealership & it's employees is nothing short of disgraceful & I reckon you deserve a refund of your last service costs with a letter of apology from the dealer principle at least......

                            Re: Dodgy Servicing

Just received a phone call from that particular workshop regarding my complaint. Obviously head officer had forwarded on my email to them and had words with them about it. Well firstly we spoke about the threat made towards my car, they know who it was that threatened me although that person doesnt work for the service centre apparently, which to me would mean that they work for the sales area for that company. The person on the phone seemed to be on my side about me being abused. He even said that there is no way I'd be taking that particular corner at a fast speed and also that my tyres are very noisy and do sound like I am going fast. He said if the guy that made the threat worked in the service team he would be currently ripping his head off and probably showing him the door. He is going to get back to me later today about what happens about that.

Secondly we spoke about my complaint about the oil change in my car. He says (be nice if someone can clarify this for me although I dont think its correct) that the oil, alot like honey, when heated its watery and runs smoothly but when its cold its very thick. He claims that the other PP'er when taking his Prado in for the 1st service, the car was serviced not long after being dropped off so the oil was still very hot and ran thru fine. But the 2nd time he took it in for a service they didnt actually get around to servicing it until late in the day, by that time the oil had gone cold and thick like honey which meant that they couldnt get all the oil out and it would have left at least half a litre of old oil in the car. Is this true? Anyone know? I dont think it is at all..... Since we have a truck and regardless of how long its been since a service it is NEVER black. I mentioned about that PP'er changing their oil themself after the incident and has now done 3,000km's and the oil is still clear, his response "He must have changed it when the car was hot". :?

More to the story..... Just got off the phone to them again. They have spoke to the person who made the threat, they admitted to what they said to me. Now its been passed over to someone up higher in the company to sort him out (the dealer principle). That'll teach him to make threats against my pride and joy!
