      Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

      Just another thought...
Give new people 12 months free so it wont turn people away if they just want to see what it's about and if they like it.
As you say - $5/year - if you wanted the amazing base of professional & handyman advice, the ongoing help as well as a "live manual" in some cases (e.g. oziexplorer tutorials etc) you'd be paying half the price fo your Prado, if not more.

          Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

IMHO I still reckon its best to tie the annual fee to something. For example:
          • $5 - entry level membership (forum user access level only)
$10 - ordinary membership (comes with 1 x small pradopoint.com sticker plus entitlement to attend Annual GTG - subject to availability)
$20 - ordinary membership (comes with 1 x large and 1 x small pradopoint.com sticker plus entitlement to attend Annual GTG - subject to availability)

Then spotting a PP sticker would become even more significant - a fully paid up member. Plus it also ensures that those that want to take part in the annual GTG or other significant forum event must be a paid up member to participate. Lastly, sponsors or vendors who offer discounts for members would clearly be able to identify those that are true forum supporters and thus restrict the benefits to members only.

Lastly, if a payment is required - how would this be made and recorded. Online? Via paypal or something?

And for any existing members that might not want to pay - how long would their membership of the forum last. Would there be a cut-off date? Sure, this would cull many users that have joined but never made a post or otherwise interacted. It would also limit those one post wonders. But it might also result in a major loss of existing posts that relate to users that have since moved on. It'd be a great loss if this information was simply lost just because they didn't continue to subscribe.

FINALLY - an interesting observation so far. If you rely on the poll results to date, the forum would have an annual membership income of only $162. Not sure how much is needed to keep the forum going but that doesn't sound like it would be enough.

          Another 2 cents worth.

Does the 'club' idea come into this... I was all for that but I guess it may be overkill for what we're trying to achieve here.

              Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

50 bucks easy! If that's what it takes then no problems from me. Even if I eventually stop reading the forum (which is unlikely) I still think it's well justified for advice that no amount of money can buy. I challenge anyone to go out and find purely unbiased, down to earth advice. It's available from very few places. Here is one.

The "contributor" or "PP Legend" or "Friend of PP" status is a good Idea. The benefits wouldn't have to be anything huge, but something that might make people consider contributing towards costs, and there's some good ideas stated already. I can tell you now that I'd be happy to contribute regardless also, but my opinion is that some small benefit could help the cause.

My opinion is be careful of compulsory charging. There are other free forums people can go to. They pale miserably in comparison to PradoPoint. In fact, PradoPoint grinds a lot of other forums to dust without raising a single bead of sweat. However they are free to join and post. Once people have to pay for something they will be more reluctant to join, and may well choose the free alternative.

We could go down the LCOOL route and pick and choose new members with an upfront fee. But my honest opinion is that this wouldn't work. Even LCOOL is free to join although they do seem to consider each new member with the short spiel they ask for upon sign up. You'd be left with a core group of members with little to no new interest, purely because people had to pay to join.

Just my opinion. I fully respect others who think differently and will support this forum any way it decides to go.

                Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

Something for your money... maybe at some point throughout the year local areas could have a BBQ day and pass a hat around. Once or twice a year would be a great way to keep in touch with the PP'ers around you. Would make handing over a 5'er or 10'er much easier than Paypal or the like.

                  Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

It seems the greatest concern with paid membership is that it may deter membership. I think that some type of staggered membership as has been suggested earlier would be a good way to alleviate this problem. Having different levels of membership at different costs would allow new people to see what the forum is all about and judge wether it is for them before paying a membership. Below is the type of membership levels I think would give a good balance:

Guest - can view threads but not post.
Trail member (free). Can view threads and submit up to 10 posts (not for sale section). No PM
Member (Cost ?). Can view and post threads in all sections and PM. Invite to GTG subject to availability
Gold Member (Cost?). Can view and post threads in all sections and PM. Priority invite to GTG.

                    Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I'm more of a lurker than a poster and I'd gladly contribute a few bucks a year. The wealth of info and the amount of enjoyment I get on PP makes it a no brainer for me.

                      Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

So far I see posts from about 20 different people (well 21 inc me),
in full support of paying a fee on the upkeep of Pradopoint.
                      A question arises;
                      Q; Where do I send my $50bucks :?:

I dont think there is anyone on Pradopoint,(maybe, (and I do say maybe) apart from our one post wonders) that has not gained or taken something from the knowledge shared here, whether it be Travel, Mechanics, DIY, Technical support, or simply just sharing a recipe or ripping yarn with like minded people who take the time to read and contribute and simply help out...............

There are Members, Admin and Moderators who work tirelessly on the upkeep of this site, There should be no questioning a contribution to Pradopoint.........

Just my opinion and few cents worth :|

I agree with Leachy, guests still need to be able to come and view, heck I know they get thousands of $ worth of free advice, etc, but I'd rather see a guest still have the ability to see what is available. I've enjoyed this forum and it has been extremely valuable to me as I build up my rig as well as the other tips that you just can't put a value on, I'd be happy to be a paid member as long as the process is simple and doesn't require me to know the secret code passed to me by a stranger on a night with a gibber moon in an unidentified location. In other words make it simple for simple types like me.

I dont have a problem with a joining fee - but 50c/month seems a little awkward. The cost of an electronic transfer from my bank may cost me more than 50c - and no I wont change banks. Anyway I have gained so much from the site - it has paid me back much more than that in intellectual capital. Mind you I have propably spent more ont he Prado since joining the forum than I actually expected. To keep things ticking $20/annum seems reasonable.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works and correct me if I am wrong , but if members start having to pay ( which I have no problems doing so ) would it not then be called a club having financial members ? and if that is the case then there legal issues with having to do AGM'S where a president treasurer etc need to be appointed , anually. Again I maybe wrong but I agree in a gathering of a BBQ or something and just throwing some money in a hat not compulsory just donations .
