    Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I think this discussion is starting to take the right form.......

I have no problems at all with a contribution....... a bargin at $50pa.

What concerned me initially was excluding people from viewing, or trying before they buy...... what we don't want is a 'private club' of 50 or so members.... the freedom of an open forum is where the great value lies.

LCOOL does not "pick and choose" members, they have a criteria that basically you need to declare who you are in "real" life on the application.
LCOOL is pivately owned and funded, the owners wish is for no bots, no spamming of members and a closed environment for robust discussion, as he owns it, I guess its his perogative
Im not saying one forum is better than another, they all have their rightful place, but please dont suggest that another forum is selective membership when it isnt.

Yep good call XVP. I just read again what I wrote and your clarification is well justified. As it happens I've just signed up to LCOOL, something I've meant to do for a while now. Gotta read all the info there before I get into posting... might take a while.

              Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

Wow...what a difficult issue...balancing up the commercial necessities with the "free spirit" aspect (as other members have put it).

Personally I think forums like this one are the best value for money information source currently available, and we as members should do what it takes to ensure they are there for the long term. Having said this my preference is to provide cash, hell I'd pay up to $100 per annum, as opposed to advertising. Advertising to me takes away the 'community' feel of the place and just turns it into another bill board.

Another idea would be to incorporate pradopoint, have an official contributing membership (with benefits) and run it as a club with the forum being but one part (and still free).

I'd also contribute to admin duties if that's what was required.

              Cheers

                Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I know I’ll probably be killed as a Philistine but I think we’ve all heard the old saying, “There’s lies, dammed lies and statistics” but just thought I’d throw this one is as some food for thought.

ExplorOz has around 48,000 registered users yet only around 5% are paid up members. Using that figure as a guide, that would result in around 225 paid up members on Pradopoint – a far cry from the current figure of around 4496 members who are currently able to contribute.

While I enjoy Pradopoint immensely I think that ExplorOz is well know as one of the largest and best four wheel drive website/databases in Australia and yet it can only attract a small number of paid up members (my self included).

The cost to join ExplorOz isn’t all that much ($60 to join then $40 for renewals) when you consider how much it costs to run a 4wd yet there is reluctance amongst its users to pay up.

I just hope that if Pradopoint goes down the path of paid membership it doesn’t result in the contributors base declining to the point were it loses the vibrance that we all currently enjoy.

I shall now retire to my foxhole with my helmet and flack jacket and await the incoming projectiles.

Ps. I hadnt even realised there was an ad for Castrol until it was pointed out.

FYI - The 'ad banner' one at the bottom of the forum page isn't what was previously being referred to. There were multiple threads all relating to a particular sponsor.

                        Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

As stated above happy to pay but ifit is only 50 cents can i do it per year it will cost me more in transfer fees if i do it every month but as above i would be happy to pay 100 per year and get us set up as a club

To the LLCOOL admin i do not think people have a problem with your site but either the mods elitist attitude or woeful customer service i am not sure which i have applied for membership to your boards 3 times with no response i find that pretty poor when i can join a US based forum and be up and running in 12 hrs
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

                          Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

As someone who has primarily been a consumer rather than a contributor the wealth of information on this site I'd happily make a contribution to the cost of running the site. I do support there remaining a category of free membership which is able to post (in limited sections, or quantities perhaps) as I believe the majority will not want to pay (per the exploroz example) and we , as a community, would lose more be excluding these people than the gain through extra compulsory memberships.

In particular rather than making 15 posts of dubious value, being able to post in the for sale section as a fully paid membermay be a worthwhile addition. As would be linking the stickers to paid membership.

Off the top of my head, another couple of ideas for raising funds might be a small charge (Say $10 or $20) for classified ads (other than giveaways), or some kind of notional fee for group buys.

I know there probably hasn't been much progress with this due to everyone being busy, but instead of charging a fee, would it be too hard to make a profit out of selling things? I can see time going into it being an issue though.

For example, the pradopoint stickers, sell them for say $5 on top of what they cost?

It's not as if 50cents a month would kill me, but I am 100% against any fees associated with visiting websites. Get ads to pay for it - every other forum I visit does.

                                Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I'm a member of a US photo forum that went from a free site to a pay site.

Within a year, the number of posts had dropped to a dribble, even with the masses of good information in the archives that was guaranteed to be free to access as part of the changeover. Since then, the site has been properly 'monetised' and the owner flogs his photo gadgets with constant barrage of ads aimed at the members - I'm told it's even worse for the non-members. There were more things involved than just the pay changes, and most users were pro photogs so they could easily afford the $20 US$ required. Many of the key members escaped to a new free site which is full of life and very active.

Hate to see PP go that way. Whatever you do, make sure the membership is largely in agreement, and don't forget to consider prospective new members - if they don't feel inclined to pay, there's the future walking by.
