    Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

Hi, Pay or dont pay, i dont pretend to understand the cost or the implications and either way i am easy, so long as paying is easy. if i have to go to a lot of trouble ie. pay 50cents every month it might be just to hard, if i can pay for say a five year block in one go and its easy, im in. As for PP saving people money, you have got to be kidding me. If this web site costs me any more money (every time i log on i find something else that I NEED) i am going to have to make the wife get a second job.

    Cheers Andrew

      Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I am neither for nor against having a paid members section with restictions for non-paid members.
So long as there is a clear plan and everyone is in agreement. Interesting that term 'everyone', should everyone be in agreement? Or could some imposition on the idea be put in place, such as the same as posting for Sale items?

There would have to be the same kind of access to information for non-paid members, such as posting, viewing a majority of the threads available now.
Restrictions could be placed into access to PP apparel, for sale and wanted threads! Annual GTG invites for paid members only, ability to create thread in the My Rig build up, or post on others buildups. Though still being able to view the buildup pages - as lets be honest - if you can't see the mod in action the how would you know that you NEED it!!! Access to PP offers from the various supportive companies involved with the forum. The list could go on...

Availablity of the stickers for paid members? possibly a good idea!

There are so many differing approaches to this idea that it is mind bogling, all that really needs to be maintained is the access to information. The extras things like: group outings, specials, sales, wanted, access to stickers, stubby coolers, GTG shirts and the like. Does it make the forum into a club? A club that shares its information with the public and non-paid members, while restiricting more 'club' (which we are not... ) type activities to paid members. If its done right, then non-paid members still get to enjoy the forum that they joined, to partake in productive conversation, learn and experience and the paid members get the bonuses on top of that.

Whats a fair price? I don't know. Ability to pay monthly, yearly, 5 yearly? Definitely better than just monthly.

I'll go with the site administrators plans on this, either way! Just my thoughts and ideas!!!

      Cheers

      Matt

        Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

        ^^ sounds good.
I don`t want to see access restricted to anyone that hasn`t paid. But I can see that restricting Rig build and GTG is a possibility. But it needs to be kept simple.

Would like to see a "Sponsor" badge next to anyone that has paid, sum to be voluntary. Leave it up to people to decide how much they are willing to contribute based on the value they get out of it. Yes there will be free loaders, life is like that.
Maybe the admin can just post every now and then that they are low and need more funds and hopefully people will appreciate that they are on a good thing and contribute.
On another forum I am on I just click on a donate button when the admin asks for funds and make a donation via paypal pay with credit card. I know roughly what the monthly costs for hosting the site are, its easy and effortless and I am not pressured into anything. Essentially it works out at about $50 ever 12-18 month.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

          Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

The topic doesn't attempt justify the apparent need for payment (is it in a different topic?), it just poses the question.

          It's a slippery slope.

Starting down this path will surely see costs rise and membership fees increase overtime. It will affect the free spirit, free contributions and free content.

Keep it free, keep the spirit, and keep it classless.

In response to the question... "Would I pay 50c/month". Probably not.

          Cheers,
          LFaR.

              Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I am a member of an international forum relating to my profession which is free to join and use, but if you "buy admin. a beer" for around 50c per month, you get access to a heap of bonus material.

              Cheers!

                  Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I think your poll answers this debate for you.
You have 52% of your members saying they would pay and you have 47% saying they would not
So if you restrict the content to 47% of your current members in any way within 3 months your membership will have been cut in half.and i dont think that is a good outcome for anyone
I think you should go down the donation path
If the 50% that are happy to pay a membership give a $20 donation each year and if you only get 25% of the other members donating $5 it would go a long way to helping pay for the forums costs.
And in reading this thread some people are willing to pay a lot more than the $20 a year
in the end if the donation route does not work you can then alter your plan with your 4000 odd members but if you went straight into the members pay route by the time you find out if its working or not, you have already lost a large portion of your members.
                  thats my 2 cents worth

                    Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

I have no problem paying a fee but in doing so would like to have the pictures downloaded directly to this site so that post dont become useless when the author deletes or moves pics. Its a worthy cause for all involves IMO and a trial period for new users before becoming full members would be better that some sites that reatrict you and in turn you have no idea if its worth joining. Either way I'm not leaving unless kicking and screaming

                      Re: Pradopoint posting/membership poll ?

                      First a question.

For a complete BB novice like me what are the costs involved in running a forum like this one?

I take it it is the domain name each year?

                      Server gigamoogoozies?

Pay for storage of photos or something?

                      And a statement.

I think if you go down the payment path then membership will not increase much. That may be a good thing or a bad thing. I dont really know if I would have joined up if I couldnt access the whole site when I first came across it. I found it because I had a prado question and went straight to the answer and realised what a great site it was. If I had to pay to join up I probably wouldnt because I wouldnt have known what the content was like. Hell, it could have been like 4wdboganaction.com or something

Kind of like having a street party for xmas but with giant fence at each end with a ticket machine. Who wants to pay before checking out the place?

                      Another question.

Would you make enough having a pradopoint.com shirt and cap done each year with member 2010 etc on it. Have them ready each October for xmas? You would be certain of getting most members who are meeting up getting them.

                      EDIT

Just thought, if you made it by voluntary donation you could have it like the legacy badges. $2, $5, $10 etc each year and you get a little icon or something in your sig post. Hell, I think I am a genius

Must admit I have only just looked at this, not too sure who posted the original poll? But from my understanding a charge for use has not been discussed between Aaron & Admins? (Not me anyway)..

Been giving this some thought after reading a lot of the comments on this thread.
I would be against paying a monthly fee, for many of the reasons given already so I won't go there, but!

I would donate money either directly or through the purchase of a PP Shirt or Cap the latter is the preferred option initially then a 6 monthly or annual donation would be the go. Monthly is too messy.

That's what I reckon anyway (for what it's worth)

                            Cheers

Locking this one off, its not going anywhere as not official on the forum anyway.

There is no plans at this point to charge for the use of PP.

I have to agree with Rainman. I've been involved with a few web-based forum groups ( fishing, model train collectors etc .. ) that have gone down this path, and a couple of them lost their followers to the point of non-existance. IMHO you need to have a physical presence ( BBQ's, workshop days, outings etc ... ) on a regular basis to support interest of a paid membership, to any group.
