  • Low range - how often does it get used ?

I was looking at all the Prados on the road this morning ( mostly loaded up with kids being taken to school ) and was wondering, what percentage do you reckon never get put into low range ?

I reckon it has to be more than 60%.

My own hasn't gone into low range for over three months, which means I haven't been bush in that long

It's probably highre than 60% I would reckon. It seems a shame to see so my 4wheelers that remain so shinny but then not eveyone purchases them for the same reason. My father in law got his 100 basically for towing his boat but has has now taken it off road and intends on doing the CSR next year. Our original purchase of a Prado was not for off road but because the family grew from four to five and we wanted to be able to comfortable get around without having a traditional people mover. During the early nities I had been looking at getting a Patrol but I have always had Toyotas so when the wife and I looked it was either a 100 or 120 that we were after.

I've always quite liked the thought that many new 4WD's never get used offroad, and
        are the family shopping trolley.

It means there are more 'clean' examples to choose from when buying second-hand
that we can then modify and use out bush as we wish.

I wouldn't always equate low range with going bush.........

With the D4D auto I find I use low range less often that I would have in the manual (90). For example rolling up to a creek crossing which is a bit lumpy but relatively shallow we just walk across in D whereas I would have previously picked up LL 2 in case. I have used mine in L a few times now on the blac ktop (with the centre diff open) to pull the tractor out of a gutter when #1 son bogs the thing trying to mow in places it shouldn't go!

Yeah, good point. The Prado has much better torque in high than the old Disco TDi, which had to go into low range as soon as you hit moderately rough stuff.

Re: Low range - how often does it get used ?

Mine gets in about once every four weeks but usually only for something very small (a few metres), maybe every 10 weeks for something decent.
Daughter goes to school up a dirt road which is corrugated and often quite slippery too, so I put the centre diff lock in almost every day - mainly just to keep it exercised.

I'm also quite happy for many people to drive their Prado's nowhere but the bitumen. It's probably the cause of various people thinking Prado's aren't a "real" 4WD but that's fine, they'll be shown up one day.

Every week to pull the (very large) boat out of the water at the ramp. For 4WDrving, generally, at least once each time we go away (say 6 times a year). I would suspect that 99% of 4WD in Sydney have never used low range except to try it out.

It's also the handbag holder, so my handbag doesn't fall over and lose the contents!

Unfortunately we only get out into the dirt or sand every couple of months...certainly too far between LR uses!

As often as I can. Still only a new vehicle so I don't go serious but like to have a play every now and then.
Should use LR in the cruisers at work more but they are work trucks and can go anywhere any time....cant they?

I use mine plenty when pulling out my retarded (mainly patrol owner) mates who dont know when to use their's!

Probably more often to hold the takeaway though.
