I was sitting in my Prado outside my wife's workplace waiting for her to knock-off. One of our local itinerants sidled up to my window and asked me for 2 bucks. I said "Sorry, no."

He said "Why not." I replied "Because I said no, now move along." He said "Just give me 2 bucks." I again said "No, please go away."

He then said "F_ _ _ you, you white dog C_ _ _." I then said "Buzz off before I get out and flog you." He again gave me a tirade of abuse directed at my skin colour.

I then started to get out of the car and he took off, no doubt to go and hassle somebody else.

He and a dozen or so of his kin hang around the main shopping precint scabbing cigarette butts off the ground and hassling people as they come out of the shops or carpark. They've "blown" in from out in the lands, some coming all the way from SA. They've done their money on booze and gambling, have no real place to stay and no method of transport to get back to where ever they came from. Enough of my hard-earned is taken from me in the form of taxes so I shouldn't have to put up with these demands for 2 bucks from people who have made a concious decision to piss their lives up against a wall.

Only a dozen :shock: we have hundreds doing the same thing here in Alice and they are ruining the town! :cry:

Well, to try and lighten the tone of this thread a bit, I will let you know my recent good deed, and the reaction I received.

Last week we were travelling from Mt Augustus to Minilya. It was about 3pm, and we were travelling alone. Kids were getting niggly, we had only seen 1 x car for the first 200 kms of the trip. We were about 170km East of Minilya near Edmund Station and the De Grey Mullewa Stock Road, when we came across an X Trail with a flat tyre.
There was a very well dressed elderly couple and their mid 40s daughter unloading gear from the back of the car to get to the tools. They were well equipped, 2 x Coopers spares on roof rack, tools, tyre repair kit etc.

I stopped to check if ok, and they said "yep, all good" But I could see on the faces of the old bloke and his wife that he was already stuffed, as it had been a constant 35 deg all day. They had all the knowledge to get the job done, but it would have taken them all afternoon, including getting tyre off & on the roof rack.
We were due for a rest break anyway to get the kids out of the car, so offered a hand, so my 2 x sons got out to help as well.

They were immediately up front about being Bible Bashers doing a run from Carnarvon out through the Communities and Stations to spread the good word.

They didnt try and convert me or anything, and in fact I had a great conversation with the old bloke about his travels over the years though the NT how he had broken down and got himself going again with some Bush Mechanics ingenuity, or with some help from "the locals".
His wife noticed my wife reading a book that they both liked the author so they had a good yak, and my 8 yr old daughter ended up telling their 40 yr old daughter our whole family history in half an hour :shock: .

When we finished, they were very grateful, and asked if there was any way to reward us. I laughed and wished them a good trip.
They didnt try to bless us, but when we got travelling again, we all had a little joke amongst ourselves about being in the good books and we should have a good trip from here on.

The kids were much happier for the rest of the trip, no mechanical troubles experienced, no straying stock to deal with, so they had obviously put in a good word for us. :lol: :lol:

It put my whole plans out by about 40 mins, which had me driving on Station roads into the sun at dusk and we got to Coral Bay after dark. but I felt much better than if I had driven past and then been wondering how they got on

You make a good point... By stopping, you missed your planned arrival time, but the journey was enriched by doing so.

Now you may go and peace to love and serve the 4WD community .

That is what it is all about helping people when you can and dealing with the others as they need to be dealt with. You get what you give 8)

When we were coming back from Perth to Brisbane in 2004 we stopped to help an elderly gent half way across the Nullabore, who had a tyre blowout on his box trailer. His younger wife and 2 kids were sweating it out in the 45 deg heat, in the full sun. His face was red and his attempts to get the wheel off the trailer failing as he was using a sissor jack and a elcheapo bull bag (exhaust type). I took the highlift off my trailer and had his tyre off in a minute only for him to complain that my jack had scratched the paint on his crappy trailer. Without even a thankyou i continued to finish the tyre change for him so his younger wife and kids could get on their way.
It has amazed me as how some people don't understand travelling in summer, unprepared can cost you more than you may be able to pay.

A simple thankyou would have been nice. It was so hot the water under my trailer was almost scalding when i cleaned up before moving on.
