I am a Process Engineer. Studied for 5 years in Melbourne and have lived at remote minesites since. Spent 10 years in the Pilbara and 4 years on a remote Gtoore Eylandt in NT. Recently moved to South Australia (still living remote). As I have small kids I only do live in type work. No fly in fly out for me thanks.

Hey there,

I am a marine pilot in sydney, this means that I am part of a small group of people that are resposible for ensuring the ships that carry your new plasma / LCD TV's, crude oil, and up until recently all the new prados (and other cars) etc get in and out of Sydney Harbour and Port Botany safely. It is one of those jobs where you just love going to work. Even though it is a 24/7 operation and we work on a 2hr call system, I only have to work evry second week and also get some annual leave as well. The down side, is climibng up a rope ladder attached to the side of the ship in 8 metre seas, when it is dark wet and windy in the middle of winter with no safety harness on (not sure if mister OH&S would like this). The upside is getting paid to work on Sydney harbour and being able to live at Nelson Bay.

Let me be the one to say Lindsay that you have the most fabulous job I have ever heard of, I would give my left lug nut to have a job like that.

When thinking about the best job... the following two sayings springs to mind:

"Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it"; and

"Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life".

And in my time off I have been known to drive the dive charter boats around the bay and outside to the islands off Nelson Bay - just in case I had forgotten what the ocean looked like!

But have to agree with ntpryce, find something you love doing and then convince someone else that they should pay you for it.

well we have a very vast array of occupations here, as the title suggestS what ya do to pay the bills, eg whats ya day job, i will get the ball rolling, me boily by trade, worked on coal mining gear, eg shuttle cars shearers, chocks (fabrication side), then went to u/g maintenance and still there, 13 years later. the work is challenging, has its moments like any job, but best of all its 4 on 3 off and all dayshift and only 38 hours a week. cheers samo : :lol: :lol: :lol:

i'm ex- navy, engineering dept., served on destroyers, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVwdUseKQoE, steam ship, so the fact i'm working in the steel works, isnt far off those days as its all big solid gear i'm workin' on now days
guilty of being a boily too, work on everything from overhead cranes, to hydraulic cellars and everything in between ... butane
its 400am here and got the boat hooked and going fishing outside , tight lines :roll:

I work in mining in PNG....I work as a project logistics manager at the giant porgera gold mine in the remote highlands.

My company supplies the trucks ands transport , fuel, catering ,accomodation and a heap of other stuff including shipping ..we also have the largest fleet of prime movers in Asia Pacific.

I am based here but also have a active roll in 2 other mine sites.

I am a chef by trade with a diploma of nutrition.

I also work in the rail industry - currently for a large consultant but in my time worked for QR (25 years), RAC/RIC (4 years) and London Underground (4 years). All in track maintenance and construction. Civil Engineer by profession. Have recently gone to 3 days per week a prelude to retirement.

Civil Engineer as well. I worked in the rail industry as well (new construction mainly but some stints of maintenance) until about 18 months ago when I made a change into more general construction projects. Currently working on a gas project in WA which is due for completion at the end of 2010. So after that, who knows?

I am a full time model as well as professional athlete , at the moment and from the time a chose this career I have been unable to find any wok in these industries . So until I can get my career moving I am in the Automotive industry , supplying parts for heavy duty , mining and agriculture industry .

Just finished science degree at uni (photography) so I'm on the hunt for a job at the moment. Hoping to work in high speed video - automotive crash testing or something along those lines. Then I can put some money into the Prado

Electrical Engineer, but working as project manager for small projects and reviewing all maintenace plans with the mine. Design engineer before that.

Want to eventually head back to Cairns, and honestly who wouldn't want to live.

I currently work in the Agricultural industry as a Business/Process Analyst. The division I'm in makes about 500 000 tonnes malt to supply the whole of Lion Nathan as well as the SE Asia brewing industry.

I'm self employed. I run a small company that specialises in construction contracting and claims/dispute resolution. Maily operate in the Minerals and Petrochemical fields but have been dragged into civil and infrastructure projects of late.
