    Gday all,

yes it was a fun little trip, or should I say short if you look at it klms wise?
We didn't need to travel very far before we got into it.
The great news is we were able to practice recovery techniques with all our gear,.....which doesn't happen very often when you have a prado. LOL

Plenty of pics were taken along with HD Video, even a GoPro was used today, so keep your eyes peeled as we'll have some footage going up very soon.

    cheers
    Stewy

Well the plan was to help Stewy, but after putting up with a swollen wrist all week (you know the male thing don't like going to the doctor) I went to the doctor, small break in the wrist, typing one finger with left hand.

The best bit was Stewy and Matt sending me texts, photos and the odd phone call to keep me in the spirit of things. That's the Pradopoint Spirit!! Can't wait to see the trip report.

See ya on the tracks (shortly), Richo.

        Just to whet the appetite...

Loads of lessons learned on this trip with many recovery attempts in barely 7kms of track.

One of the lessons has to do with tow hooks... After a couple of gentle snatch attempts, the next attempt was to sink the boot and perform a full snatch. With everyone back a safe distance, the recovery vehicle started its run and as the full force went onto the strap, there was a loud "twang" as it let go with astonishing speed. There was a small explosion of water near the front of the bogged vehicle and before you could blink, there was another small explosion of dust in front of the recovery vehicle, where the strap touched down. It was incredibly violent, and so fast that it left everyone open-mouthed. Moments like this are reminders why we make sure everyone is at a safe distance. I'll also point out, that the passengers were also out of the vehicles, so it was text book in that regard.

What went wrong? Well here's a photo of the damaged strap. Can you guess what happened?

        Cheers,
        LFaR.

Did the dampner on the strap help it to drop to the ground?

If the strap landed in front of the recovery vehicle I doubt a dampner was used!

Why didn't you put the Maxtrax under the front wheels? The idea of the Maxtrax is also to help break the vacuum created under the body by forcing the vehicle upwards and forwards... not just to plow the mud.
                    Cheers, Leon

Every car here had Maxtrax on board, however in this case, due to the ruts being so deep, the Hilux (and my Prado prior to this), were well and truly sitting on the axles. Looking at the shot of my Prado you can see that the front shocks have dropped down with the wheels virtually swing in the breeze (or goop in this case!). I was lucky to not be as stuck as hard as the hilux and was able to be gently snatched out backwards. Whilst taking the up the slack of the snatch strap, with my Prado in reverse the wheels were spinning even whilst idling. Perhaps the Maxtrax could have been used successfully first on mine by driving out backwards, but it was a winch job for the lux. We found that the bulk of the ruts on this track had well and truly been chewed out by fourby's running big tyres. Hence the reason we see so many vehicles stuck and recoveries in process when heading home on a Sunday afternoon!

Heres a pic of mine stuck fast in the same bog as the lux

                          Hi Guys,

                          How did your trip go?
I saw you at the BP as you pulled out, I was in a group with 2 hiluxes and a Jeep.
We had a great time on the eastern side of the highway, nearly tipped as the front right wheel broke through what looked like hard dirt only to find it to be VERY soft underneath, lucky to drive straight out.
How often do you guys organize day trips, could another join in??

                          Cheers

                          Anthony

Was a great day out for all.
It wasn't too long before the first vehicle was stuck.
Brad in the Hilux made the most of the bog holes.

Below is LFaR, this PIC shows the sort of terrain.
