    Hi brogers,

    Try RACQ trip planner
    http://www.racq.com.au/travel/Maps_a...s/trip_planner

I've done the trip from Brissie's southern suburbs a few times now. From here we go up through Toowoomba to Dalby but the Racq site shows you going to Kilcoy, Blackbutt, Dalby. I'm not sure what the Blackbutt to Dalby road is like. (If it's a bit suss, the 1 hour extra to come through Brissie then out to T'ba, might be worth it.)

From Dalby, out to Morven then north to Barcaldine, west to Longreach, north west to Kynuna then Cloncurry, then west to the Isa.
(If you're in a hurry you wouldn't go from Longreach out through Boulia - we did have to do this years ago when the Kynuna road was flooded, but it's a long way round.)

You mention the quickest way to travel to Mt Isa. Are you intending to get yourself to the Isa in the quickest time possible also? Are you intending on doing the trip in one hit (1830 klm can be done in a single 19 hr stint but not recommended of course) How many K's do you intend to cover each day? as there is so much to see and do on the way.

Coming from someone who grew up in Mount Isa, I'm wondering why on earth would you want to go to Mount Isa?

Thanks folks, looks like from Caboolture to Kilcoy to Blackbutt to dalby is certainly ok, and will avoid the city somewhat. Then Roma, Morven, Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach, Winton, Cloncurry.

Does anyone know current road conditions, and if there is any flooding etc?

The trip to Mt Isa is for family-work reasons, (not a tourist trip or holiday per se) as the son-in-law has accepted a job there and we want to help him settle in.

We need to travel up quickly 9twodays hopefully) as we don't have to much time on the way up, but any suggestions for a tourist stop or two on the return journey would be appreciated,

kind regards and Merry Christmas to all.

              x2 Well worth the visit.

Stop for a sherbet or lemonade at Kynuna Surf Club AKA Blue Heeler Hotel.
There's a lot of 'history' in there.

The Hall of fame and Qantas Museum in Longreach are now on the agenda, thanks folks.

We will also be sure to stop at the Blue Heeler Hotel at Kynuna as well.

Has anyone stayed in a caravan park/campground in Mt Isa recently and can make any recommendations?

                Thanks folks

We have just done a road trip from Sunshine Coast to Longreach / Winton, away for 12 days in total. We went to Dalby via Blackbutt and Yarraman and the road was fine. Many highlights on the way:
                  QANTAS Museum
                  Stockmans
                  Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton
Beer and steak sandwich at Blue Heeler pub at Kynuna
                  Wide open spaces
                  How green it was
                  Lack of other road traffic
                  Outback hospitality

We had a great time (even the kids enjoyed it). We put the cruiser on the train at Longreach and returned home in 24 hours, QR looked after us very well.

                    Excellent news and thankyou.

If we leave Caboolture just before sunrise, do you think we could make Longreach in a day??

Brogers, yes you could do that in a day if you had 2 drivers, but it would be a big day. You will miss out on a lot though.

I agree with Fox as you go through towns like Tambo, Blackall, Barcaldine they have fantastic history and the people you meet are an experience as well. An interesting point is the distance between towns, it's a couple of hours in the car but it used to be one days horse ride.

See if you can get more time you'll have a fantastic time, Richo.

Time is limited on the way up to Mt Isa, but we have more time for the return trip...with 2 drivers we hope to make it to Longreach (or at least Blackall) in one day on the way up to Mt Isa, but we also hope to see more sights on the return trip....thanks folks...and Merry Christmas

                            A successful trip folks,

Caboolture to dalby via Blackbutt/Yarraman/Kaimkillenbun and then on to Chinchilla, miles, Roma, Chareleville in one day no problem.
A visit to the cosmos centre for a view of the night sky at Charelville, and had a good look at Jupiter, venus, moon and some stars, constellations with an expert guide, a must do folks.

Next day Charleville, Augathella, Blackall, Longreach, Cloncurry and Mt Isa....and we hit a heat wave....50 degree celcius on the Prado outside temp guage!!!

The trip was fine, not much traffic as everyone else had meted away and was hiding from the heat....

Return trip stopped at the QANTAS museum, very interesting and worth the trip. Quite green. Advoided very very early sunrise time morning and dusk/night driving as kangaroos were quite prevalent at those times (as evident by the fresh road kill littering the highway) we drove in the heat but the aircon handled it fine.

                            Love our Prado

Thanks for the trip advice advice folks
