  • Mudlo Rocks Rainbow Beach - unsafe to cross 4hrs before high tide today

For those planning a trip soon a word of warning from our adventure today.

We headed of with all intentions of arriving in Rainbow Beach mid afternoon and going for a leisurely swim and settling in for the weekend.

With Rain for the last 1/2 of Teewah beach I was still glad we'd skipped the highway route and headed for the beach as soon as we could.

Leisha track was a breeze and then we hit this about 500m along Rainbow Beach

OK, that's a little more water than I expected given we were there at 2pm and 2.05m high tide wasn't due until 6.38pm on Raindow Beach. We pressed on as the township is only 10kms away and it would be a quick retreat if that was needed.

A couple more narrow bits of beach and then it opened up to easy going. . . . until we got to Mudlo Rocks at Rainbow Beach itself.

Behind a Patrol with a couple of young blokes sinking a beer as they drove, we assessed the notorious Mudlo Rocks. Not good. Some deep holes hiding that the photo barely shows.

after 2 mins that pic was taken and we headed back to do the round trip via Freshwater track. The guys in the Patrol soon did the same. We passed a couple of cars on the way back who may have attempted the crossing. If so I hope they made it.

Without the sun in our eyes we also saw this on the way back to DI Pt. A timely reminder of what this beach can do to cars.

We made it back to Leisha track at DI Pt and passed thru with only a slight bit of water across the narrow beach section.

Off to Freshwater Track went and arrived in Rainbow Beach township safely about 45 mins or so later than we had originally thought. Freshwater Track is a little bumpy but fine to tackle as a safe alternative at the moment.

2 new sets of Maxtrax and I am still glad I retreated, even with my better half not so happy with the extended travel time. Next time I'll let them stroll thru the bit of water and wait in town for me to drive the car around.

If you're up this way soon keep in mind tide times. Other than deal low tide, it's very risky at Mudlo Rocks, and near DI Pt.

Off to explore some other tracks over the weekend. Let the adventure continue!

You did the right thing IMO.

Getting stuck with the only chance of recovery being some young piss heads is not my idea of fun.
    Have a good trip!

Good on you mate for turning around and not taking the risk. I remember a few years ago when on Fraser Island we were heading back from north of Indian Head - desitination Eruong turn-off. One problem, we left it too late with the tide and had to drive back with enough track width on the beach for 3 cars just south of Indian Head. When we got to Eli Creek we were more than concerned. I was crapping myself actually. It looked rough, and when two of us walked it it was thigh deep, then another wave set came in and it was waste/stomach deep with a strong current. We piled back in the car and were determined to cross it because we didn't want to spend the night parked up on a dune in the cool night breeze with 5 people and no beveridges. I remembered the 7 set rule with waves (each set getting bigger and bigger until the 7th set), we had to time it very carefully before crossing, but we made it and then had another few dicy encounters with sea water covering the entire beach for extended periods on the way back to Eurong in the dark. I would never do it again as it's not a good feeling. I'm normally careful with allowing enough time for the tides on our trips back along the beach on Fraser but left it too late on this occassion.

I've never had a problem on Rainbow or D.I. Point personally, but I have seen the rusty chassis of that early model Pajero poking up through the sand and I do know potentially how dicy it could get.

Was there a fortnight ago and we approached the beach from rainbow beach at low tide according to the tide times and couldn't get past the first section of rocks. There was a land cruiser ute lucky to be 2 years old that was bobbing in the water, all the glass smashed and panels looking worse for wear, the guy didn't make it back the night before in time to get around the rocks.

There's certainly no problem keeping the trophy wall full at Rainbow Beach Hotel. There is a never ended stream of people willing to challenge mother nature with nasty conscequences.

Some cars going around mudlo about 1 1/2 hrs before low tide today. We waited a bit longer and went thru no worries about an hr before low.

Great day at DI Pt. Sunshine, sand and plenty of soldier carbs for the kids to chase.

Brett1979 I know what ya mean. We've been caught out on Fraser too. You do it once and if lucky, plan better from then on so you can avoid the sick feeling you get trying to get back.

Anyone crossed Mudlo rocks lately? Planning a drive to Rainbow this weekend, and would like to hit Mudlo right at low tide (2pm).

Well a very entertaining video, lucky it's only a patrol
We should be right, shit well I thought so, till I noticed the smooth sand that they were stuck on, obviously was going to get wet again. Poor buggers hey, put a stick under it to hold it up, I'd think let the tyres down till u can drive up a bit more.
But then not get in that situation is the best. I wonder what came of it? I think they should've been ok? there were 2 guys securing the rope, that will help..... Right?
Seriously poor buggers, but you gotta laugh at it now hey?

Yeah screw driving in salt water around those rocks, wreck your vehicle if you don't loose it!
