    I wouldn't mind exploring Lockyer sometime, but unfortunately for this weekend, it looks like your decision to call this trip off was the right one:

    All roads within Lockyer National Park closed until Monday 2 July

    This alert applies to the following parks:

    Lockyer National Park
    Due to current dangerous road conditions and local flooding, all roads and fire trails in the Lockyer National Park have been closed temporarily for safety reasons.

    The use of vehicles on unsealed roads in the area during this time is considered dangerous and is likely to cause severe structural damage.

    These roads are expected to re-open on Monday 2 July 2012.

    The safety of visitors and the conservation of the road and fire trail system is of concern to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service during these conditions.

      Well I went to Toowoomba today and decided to make a little detour on the way back. 18 months on and the wet weather of late has made a fare difference to this track. Unfortunately no photos. I took the Helidon turn off and entered from seventeen mile rd. Those that have been in here before will know the section where there are 3 tracks, the centre one being very step and I can tell you it has rutted out a lot more since I was there last time. As I was the only vehicle I got about a third of the way up and called it quits. The other tracks were quit easy. The entrance from Wallers rd has certainly got a lot more chopped up also. Still good afternoon detour.


      I went via murphys creek as well trying to find some tracks but other than the motor cross area and murphys creek retreat couldn't really find much there. If any one knows some tracks out that way I'd be interested to know where they are to have a bit of an explore.

        i guess all the water through there over the last few years has probably changed the landscape alot.

          I'm not exactly sure where the motor cross area is, but I have been up the 'track' from Murphys creek that comes out opposite the Farmers Arms pub at Cabarlah on the new England highway. To get to this track you turn left at the Murphys creek store and follow that all the way through. It starts with a big 30%+ climb which is no real sweat in the dry and then the 'road' just goes through the bush with tracks branching off left and right everywhere. At the end right before the for sale subdivisions, there are a number of 4wd hill climbs of varying steepnesses and difficulties.

          On the other side of Toowoomba I have been exploring the Flagstone creek powerline areas with a view to organising a Prado drive day in the very near future.(January?) Let me know if anyone would be interested. Again, most of it is straight forward in the dry, but potentially treacherous in the wet. It also appears to have a near permanent mud track.

            LYTNING....I'd be interested in a Prado day drive sometime in the N. Year. If you get a day organised, throw it up on trip planning, you'll get a few of us coming along??? Always keen to get to new areas!!?? PM me if u like!!! Thanks.

                The first time I took that track was in late 2010 - after the big-wet had started but before the big floods. It was a reasonable challenge - deep ruts in a few places, a few muddy spots, and the big climb was as slippery as hell. I went back beginning of this year, and it had been graded at some point, and it looks like gravel has been laid down & rolled. It was just a straightforward gravel road, didn't even lock the centre diff. There's still plenty of side-tracks that look like they might be worth exploring that would probably provide a bit of a challenge.

                It's been a while since I explored around there. Last time I did all the gullies were filled with sharp bluestone. A nice simple drive with some good views through the hills, but you are forever dodging motorbikes.

                Another fairly straightforward track that can be either extremely easy or a moderate challenge depending on recent weather is a track from Morleys Rd at Ballard (go down Murphy's Crk Rd from T'ba and turn right just after the rail overbridge). There are "No Through Road" signs but if you keep going it becomes a dirt track that eventually comes out on Jones Rd at Withcott. There are a few spots with nice views, a couple of gully crossings that can be anywhere from a nice hard & firm surface to a mudhole, and a few narrow spots through the lantana & undergrowth. Depending how long it is since it was graded, you may find you are skirting deep washouts in places too.

                A mate has told me about a track up behind Bailey Henderson hospital that is apparently not too bad. Only short, but he said it was a reasonable challenge with mud, ruts & a steep climb. I haven't looked myself yet though.

                    This looks god geograza. Have been looking for a bit of info on local tracks around here. Will be good for taking my son out learning. He recently bought a 45 series shorty so he can tag along

                        Whoever maintains the tracks for the access to the powerlines has been out there again recently and tidied up a lot of the tracks, the bluestone has settled in and this came in very handy during the recce we did when it was very wet... We must have been lucky as far as bikes and other cars go, as we haven't seen anyone else out there as yet...

                        I beleive this is actually Tor Street, I had a look at this recently but only from the city side, and unfortunately it is blocked off and you'd have to go from the dump side. But yes, very short, probably less than a kilometre and would be worth a quick look.

                            Went and had a look at Tor street from the other end and it turned out to be quite surprising. Has quite a few tracks going all over the place and is a mini 4wd test area as geograzza's mate mentioned.

                              Took my son for a drive on the run from Hampton to Murphy ck and Withcot. Nice simple track. Road was in good nick and suitable for beginner. There were a couple of hill climbs off to the side for a bit of extra fun on the Cabarlah end. Only a couple of chook chasers to dodge took an hour end to end so returned same way

                                More on “Weller Rd” at the Ravensbourne end, not Wallers Rd. I thought it’d be a gazetted road much beyond where it seemingly ends. At the beginning of Weller Rd there’s a sign that reads, “Dry weather road only.” When you drive down it for about 1km, the track comes to an end. Just before the end on the R.H.S there are two tracks side by side that look well used. They merge into the one track just meters in. The one on the left has an old steel gate blocking access. The track on the right has no gate, but a couple of old weathered signs nailed up in the trees saying Stop & No Access (from memory). The right track in had tyre tracks on it. On Google Earth you can see the dirt track continues through the thick bush for much further with numerous side tracks coming off it. I thought it was a gazetted road through but could be wrong. I opted not to drive it, but did a few other pretty decent tracks while there might I add. Some of the winding logging tracks in the area were great to drive. I guess my question is.... Is the Weller Rd gate & signage just a stunt from a property owner who doesn’t who doesn’t like people passing through their property on a gazetted road or are you actually not allowed because the track is private property?
