I did the Cape last year (with a second spare)......I have never needed a second tyre (in fact never even needed the first one)....so that's Simpson (2011), Cape (2012) and just returned from the hardest of the lot the CSR.

    How have I survived,

    Correct Tyre pressures

    Taking it easy where neccesary

Going with fairly new tyres.....I ditched my old ones in June for a new set and they probably still had 20,000K's to go (I use two of them as spares now).

That said I think I would always carry a second spare BUT I really don't think the Cape is very hard these days (great fun but NOTHING like the CSR) so you could go without one and be fine!!

Have fun guys BUT 24 (or more) will be a VERY scary trip.......getting camping spots alone will be a knightmare

    Cheers

    • Dan,
I think with so many Prados running the same tyres sizes, I am sure there would be more than enough spares between the group.
If you are worred about the weight, you could always just take a second tyre and no rim if you really wanted to.

The challenge will be securing a campsite. It will be like musical chairs when the music stops.....

      Cheers

      • Hi everyone,
I think that we should stop at 25 cars and see what the confirm list will be later on.
Reason being, gumboot is right! The hardest thing with 25 cars is finding a camp site on the tele track that we can all fit into. Some people on the list may not come of course but at the moment going to have to stop it there.

        • I was hoping not to take a second spare due to space, thx for advice there.

Good idea capping the list, will be full on with 25 for sure!

We are definitely coming, time off work is booked so will be the 2 of us with bub.

It's a fair way out I know but is there camp spots we need to book? In advance?

Dan I think for Elliot falls you can only book 6 months out, I will send a few emails out to find out on Loyalty Beach, Archer River,
I think if people wanted to stay at Coconut Resort in Cairns that may need to be booked early but I will find out about that also .
I stayed In the campgrounds at Elliot Falls last time, we may split the group up there for camping if people want to pay to camp closer to Elliot Falls the rest camp at Canal Creek .

                • This is an interesting read. The MySwag crew are going up to the cape in 2014. Their limit is 15 vehicles and below are their dates and intended schedule.

Dates: Sat 21st June 2014 to Sat 5th July We leave the week before the Qld School holidays.

                  Rough Itinerary and can change:

                  Cape York 2014
Sat: Cairns to Maytown: We leave Cairns and travel inland through Mareeba and turn off the bitumen and head to historic Maytown.

Sunday: Maytown to Hahn River: We travel the old coach road which is a real challenge. Depending on time we may stop at Jowalbinna Rock Art Safari Camp of further up the road at Hahn River.

Monday: Hahn River to Moreton Telegraph Station.

Tuesday: Moreton Telegraph Station to Dulhunty River. Today we tackle the start of the OTL.

Wednesday: Dulhunty River. Enjoy a day relaxing in the clear waters of the Dulhunty River.

Thursday: Dulhunty River to Eliot Falls. We tackle the remaining southern part of the OTL crossing Gunshot creek and Cockatoo Creek.

Friday to Sat: Members must book a camp sites at Eliot falls and this will be our base for a couple of days. I will advise which sites to book and when as we can only book 6 months in advance. From here we will do the northern part of the OTL without the campers then travel to the Cape itself.(Members who have not been to the Cape can just do the OTL and head to the Cape after Vrylia Point) Here you can top up with food and drinks and get your photo taken at the Tip. This will be a full day and we will head back to our base camp that afternoon.

Sunday: Eliot Falls to Vrylia Point. We travel via the Development road to Vrilya Point and camp at the northern end.

Monday: Explore the area and drive along the beach to the Cottrell River , fish and watch the stunning sunsets over the Gulf.

                  Tuesday: A day to relax.

Wed: Time to head back down the track and part ways or members can head up to the Cape if they did not wish to do the trip while at Eliot Falls.

                  Cheers

The day to travel the Northern part of the OTT and back to Eliot Falls would be a big day.

I would love to go again next year.

The only advice I could give you is travel in groups of about 5 as in a large group you'll find some people pack up and are ready to go quickly whereas others can take their time and feel rushed. It took us 2.5 hours to get the 5 cars across Palm Creek. I could only imagine that with 15 vehicles towing campers.

                    • Hi All,

Has there been any further updates on this trip?
Possible date changes / Planned overnight stay locations etc...

Starting to plan as big year for me for trips.

                      1) Victorian GTG before Easter.
                      2) Local 4WD Tri-State GTG at Rydel, NSW
                      3) Cape York.
                      4) Other 4WD Club Trips.

Suggestion - Could break group into say 5-10 Vehicles, leave 1 day apart, but altogether at Cape York, briefly.

Half way up the 12mm tongue snapped and flipped the trailer with 4 x 20L drums of diesel, rifles and sleeping gear. Nothing damaged inside, not a drop of fuel spilt, couldn't believe it. Canopy bars got bent and the non-tear tarp got a 10mm cut. A small tour bus come past and we all flipped it back over, swapped the tongue off another car travelling with us and finished the trip without another hitch (excuse the pun lol). How’s that for luck and a well-built trailer if I may say so myself. Promised myself I would never take another trailer. Did the trip again in 92 with a Toyota 4 Runner Diesel without a trailer and was easier. Now with such capable vehicles and trailers made for trips like the cape I would reconsider taking one if I brought the family.

                        • Please put my car containing the wife and I down as very likely coming. We would take the opportunity to visit friends in Port Douglas on the way up, so we would pick up the group as they head past there or meet up at the Daintree ferry. Whatever works best. We are Cape rookies, but are fairly confident off-road. Only thing that worries me is Nolan's, but I'd love to say I've done it! We will be 'oztenting' it.

Edit: Would anyone be interested in doing the CREB as a prelude (weather permitting) and meeting up with the others at Cooktown?

                              • I'd also like to be penciled in if there is still space. Just got back from cape last month and keen to go again. Pretty dry and very dusty. Only 2 creeks over bonnet. Nolans and the one before Nolans (name escapes me). Excellent camping facilities at Cockatoo with huge undercover area and immaculate toilets. I'll bring the Loctite and a roll of denso tape to wrap a few starter motors. What is it with electrics and water???
