NSW: Sunday April 7th: Ourimbah State Forest

We're heading up to Ourimbah State Forest for some 4x4 fun and exploring. Suspension lift is recommended, lockers an advantage.

Finishing time is flexible but if you'd like to leave earlier, the F3 Freeway is nearby.


Bring: GLOVES, Prado, morning tea, lunch, water/drinks, camera, air compressor/recovery gear if you have it, sense of adventure.

Well, what a day! We had a turn out 2 Prado’s, both 150's and thanks to Nick and Bron for a great day.

The juicy bits first, 6 recoveries, 1 stuffed tyre, a dented door, some well adjusted Toyota side steps and a whole lot of fun in between. The tracks were dry and little water but a few very slippery clay sections.

Started on the usual track and also had the first recovery, just a gentle snatch. We then both realised that the centre diff wasn’t locked, only difference was tyres.

Next track was fun, normal water holes, easy. We then continued further down the track and it very quickly became rutted with a few very slippery sections. The second section was a beauty and it was here that I managed to adjust the aerodynamics of my rear passenger side door. Yes, a horrible sound but nothing I could do.

We decided that there was no point in continuing as the 2nd Prado would have suffered the same fate, so I turned around and tried coming back up. We then met a guy in a well setup Jeep, good lift, 35’s and lockers who had driven down earlier. From here I got to use my winch for the first time and would not have got out without it. The Jeep then winched up the same section as he could not dive it. The next section required both Prado’s to winch but the Jeep drove out, just.

We then followed the Jeep on a few new tracks that were fun before lunch including an interesting downhill part that looked and felt different to the photo.



After lunch we continued on a track described by the Jeep driver but had to turn back due to a large fallen tree and no chainsaw.
So as usual, we decided that one more track would be good before heading home and did our second track in reverse. It was amazing, that a track that we both did easily in one direction could be so different in reverse. A section we drove uphill was so much harder downhill for both Prado’s. One rut, another winch to get the front wheels out, some adjusted side steps and it was time to air up and head home.

Was a top day my side steps will never be the same nor will my cooper STs put a 1 inch gash in the side wall.

Heaps of challenging tracks up there forcing us to get the winch out a few times and nice and close to Sydney.

Great to have Dave along with some good local knowledge and not bad on the tools for tyre changing. Also thanks for the great videos.

Looking forward to the next trip, possibly an over nighter camping if anyone is keen?
