  • Perth to Victoria - Suggested Itinerary.

    Hi All.

Glad to see PradoPoint is still thriving these days. Been through the crapper in the last few years and now I'm all on my lonesome. Think cheating B***H and you've got the story.

Just looking at a possible trip across the Nullarbor, skip over the top of Melbourne and head into the Snowy River National Park area etc etc. Flown over Victoria before, and have been in Melbourne airport a couple of hours before, but I never got around to checking the place out properly. I was going to just fly to Melbourne, pick up a camper of some description and take a tour of the place. But then I got to wondering about what would happen if I wanted to go offroad, and with a perfectly good 120 sitting at home all lonely. Trouble is - I'll only have about 3 weeks max off work, and that's with me leaning on the boss pretty hard.

I was hoping someone would have a good method of driving across the Nullarbor and could recommend the good and not so good places to stop and overnight. Suggested itineraries so far...

Perth to Norseman via Coolgardie 723km
    Norseman to Ceduna 1201km
    Ceduna to Burra 669km
    Burra to Albury 950km

That seems like a fair slog, and I think that might have been a truck driver who suggested that. 1200k's in a day? Bit of an ask for just one driver, but it'll get me there - ish in 4 days I suppose.

    Another suggestion is

    Perth to Norseman 723km
    Norseman to Eucla/Border Village 722km
    Eucla/Border Village to Ceduna 479km
    Ceduna to Burra 669km
    Burra to Albury 950km

    Total - 3543KM

I just picked Albury as a spot close to where I want to be, but these places are just dots on the map to me at the moment. So any other route after Ceduna and I'm all ears. Didn't really want to tackle Adelaide or Melbourne's traffic if I could avoid it.

If there's good caravan parks or camping spots you guys can tell me about along the way then I'd really appreciate it. If I can avoid hotels and their hotel prices then I will. .

Remember that you will lose 1.5hrs when you get into SA. So your 12 hour 1200km trip becomes 13.5hrs. Driving across the Nullabor and into SA in darkness has it's hazards. Roos in WA and those bloody wombats across to Ceduna. The motels across the bulk of the way to Port Augusta are pretty basic.

Last time we did it about 7 years ago we did

        Perth - Norseman
Norseman - Nullabour Roadhouse That way you can get out to Head of the Bight first thing in morning to see the Whales before the ranger gets to work
        Nullabour roadhouse - Port Augusta
        Port Augusta - Clare
Then you can make your way into Vic, we take this route when we do the reli run to Sydney.

        That was towing a camper.

Thanks for the replys guys!! Seems that most people don't camp on the way over?? I was thinking I'd just swag it a few nights and hotel it on every other night. Will just be me with a loaded Prado so I was going to try doing the trip on the cheap. Guess it's really the Norseman to ?? leg that I'm not sure about. Heard the roos can be bad at dusk and after dark - guess the ARB bar & winch should fend a few off if it comes to that. But if anyone knows a good spot to camp overnight along the way I'd be interested in that. Would you get stung if you just drove off the road along the bight someplace and camped?

Never mind Madkore - being single ain't all bad. .

What's that Nullarbor Roadhouse like? Doesn't seem to crack much of a mention with people I've asked so far.

I'll be doing the Nullabor on my return leg from Perth later this year, with the wife and kids. We will be camping all the way, and thinking about stopping at Norseman, Eucla, and then on to Fowlers Bay (Cactus Beach) and Mambray Creek, just out of Port Augusta. No idea what the facilities are like at any of these stops, and given I have 3 kids, we won't be on the road for more than 8 hours per day, as much as can be helped, so you may be able to travel a bit further between stops.

I have been advised to start days early and stop driving before dusk to minimise the road hazards...

Last time I did that route (2006 east to west, slower) we stayed in caravan park at Ceduna/Eucla, basic but ok. then camped on the Nullabor> Caravan park Norseman.

There is/was also a free campground just outside Whyalla but its a 100km detour.

Hi mate I can't really help with the trip from Perth to albury, but as far as the camping goes in vic,

What time of year? Much of the high country is closed from Easter to melb cup weekend.
Do you really want to go all the way to the snowy river Nat park? It's in the Far East of Vic and will add a lot of travel to your trip. Personally I don't think much of the camping in the snowy. However out of albury you can get to some great spots, such as the buckland valley, and some awesome driving too. You could really get to some the iconic parts of Victoria's high country and save yourself 400 k of driving each way.

There are quite a few spots along the Bight and just off the highway. The Chardonnay Set get in early. Be careful as many of the carparks are open and subject to high winds and freezing temperatures. Don't camp too close to the edge. I camp at the Eucla golf course when I go across the Nullabor. There's never anyone there to annoy you, but it is a couple of kays off the highway. I find the marked carparks are noisy and full of discarded used toilet paper and you get woken by the road trains. I rather go in a bit to get a secluded spot. The road-houses are noisy too with generators and traffic all night.

Ahh thanks Bushbasher, that's what I was after RE the Eucla golf course camping spot idea. Nice and out of the way camping spots are what I was after. I've come across heavily bush streamered spots before and it can be pretty disgusting. Will just be me with a swag and that's it so no need for a palace.

Heath: I was thinking it might be later on this year, maybe September or October. There's a chance I might have to put it off until next year as my mates have moves afoot to drag me off to Japan for a Ski trip, but I'm trying to wriggle out of that . As long as I can get some nice high country scenery in then I'm really not too fussed where I end up. Because it'll just be me at this stage I guess I can't do any 4WD tracks that are a bit dicey in case something happens, but some good scenic tracks would be perfect.

The extra 400K's to get to far East Vic after coming over from WA probably won't hurt that much .

I just chose some spots off the map so far, but man, any suggestions and I'm all for it. I'm at the stage of pinning down some good drives a single vehicle could do. I was just handed an article on the Corn Hill Track actually and it seemed pretty good. Article says that is in the Mt Skene area? Is there any way I can get info on the condition of these tracks before going?

Never done deep water crossings etc etc before so - I gotta be realistic about what I can do.

                      Hey I-P
Me and the family just returned from 2 weeks travelling from Melbourne along Great Ocean Road to Port Campbell, then back to Melbourne, then up to Wangaratta via Lake Eildon then down along the Great Alpine Road to Bright, then downtown to Bairnsdale and back to Melbourne. All in a BIG Maui camper, great fun but those roads are windy and take longer than you think compared to our travel times over here in WA. we were pogoing to drive over but time didn't permit. If I was you, once over in Melbourne, go straight over to Bairnsdale and up the Great Alpine Road as far as Mt Hotham, this was definitely the most picturesque part and less turns. Other option is just do Mt Buller but scenery ain't so good.
