  • Sydney to Corner Country School holidays July 2015

    Hi Everyone

I am planning to travel from Sydney to corner country commencing Monday 29th June, just one vehicle. Is anyone else heading that direction?
The current plan is to travel via White Cliffs then direct to Milparinka, then Tibooburra and Cameron Corner but, I hear there has been rain and I don't know how the roads recover. Does any have experience with those roads?

    Thanks in advance

I was up at Bourke for work last week and there was about 80mm of rain with many roads closed but should be good now

        Hi Guys

Thanks for the feedback. I had checked the livetraffic website and noted that the roads were now open. I don't have any experience with their term "open to 4wd only with caution", hence the questions. I read that Bourke and White Cliffs reported in excess of 50mm. With only one vehicle, I really don't want to take chances. I will be ringing the Tibooburra NPWS office to check.

        Regards

Hi Snowmann - went from Broken Hill through Tibooburra to Camerons just before the rains and clay sections of roads were already a bit cut up from 25mm they had at end of May so expect it will be very average (was grooved but dry for me) in that area after this drop. Pack a short handled spade/shovel/trowel as I expect "4wd only" now means you'll be digging clay out of wheel arches regularly if its still soft.

Suggest fuel up at Tib ($1.59/litre) and spend savings on beer money at Cameron's ($2.20/litre). Not sure if you are looping up to Innaminka ($1.80/litre) but the road through Merty Merty to New Strez was fine before rain, bit corrugated in parts but nothing to worry about as people pulling vans along it (good fun zooming over dunes). Pretty sure Bore Track is permanently closed so dont wait for it to open up. Fuel prices as of two weeks ago. Lots of kamikaze emus (all day) and roos (approaching dusk) south of dog fence so take care.

Have fun - great part of the world!!

            Hi Thurbie and others

Thanks for the advice, just got back and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Big fuel tanks on the Prado gives us plenty of options. I ended up refuelling at Cobar ($1.45), White Cliffs ($1.90), Tibooburra ($1.59), Innaminka ($1.80), Cunnamulla (%1.50), Dubbo ($1.45) but never putting more than 90 litres any fill.

All roads were open and no problems with water/mud.

The staff at Camerons Corner suggested Old Strezleki for the first half then New Strezleki for the second half to get to Innaminka and turned out to be a good run. I had dropped tyre pressures to 28 pounds at White Cliffs when the dirt started, but dropped to 26 pounds on both the car and camper trailer approaching Camerons Corner because the corrugations were getting a bit intense.

A big thank you to Larry (Ymus) displaying a Pradopoint sticker - we didn't know each other but Larry invited us to join his group on a run out of Milparinka to find Sturts Cairn, then share his group's camp site at Innaminka.

            Cheers
