If Mildura is full there is a great caravan park on the river in Rennmark. I will be about 5 days behind you heading to Coober Pedy for an Anne Beadell crossing. I suggest a rest day in Alice after 6 or 7 days driving. You, your wife and kids will appreciate it.

Awesome thanks for that info. Will check it out.Originally posted by 404pug View PostIf Mildura is full there is a great caravan park on the river in Rennmark. Alice is go/no go for the kids. If they're not coping they're on a flight back to Sydney. Haven't discussed that with my wife yet though.
Seriously though, it is a bit of a consideration & that's the reason for the Hawker stop TBH. To make it a short day before Oodnadatta Track. If it was just me if I'd so Syd/Maree in two days. There's a rest day at either Batton Hill or Innamincka on the cards. And nights are booked at White Cliffs motel too. Not sure if we've got two days to fill there, but figured a rest day would be in order.[SIZE=2]120 GXL D4D Auto, with a 'List of Wants' greater than the 'List of Needs' greater than the 'List of Haves'

Stayed there on the way back from the Flinders Ranges last October. Very good facilities, camp kitchen and peaceful vista. Playground for the kids and only a short drive into town.Originally posted by 404pug View PostIf Mildura is full there is a great caravan park on the river in Rennmark. I believe the plan at this stage is Mt Dare, Old Andado, Alice
The route is very elastic and should really read like this
Tuesday, 27 September - Depart Maree
Weds 12 October - arrive White Cliffs - via Mt Dare, Alice Springs Batton Hill/Jervois Station Mt Knuckey, Hay River Track, Poeppel Corner, QAA, Birdsville, Innamincka, Cameron Corner[SIZE=2]120 GXL D4D Auto, with a 'List of Wants' greater than the 'List of Needs' greater than the 'List of Haves'

We stayed at Wilpena rather than Hawker and then headed off to Marree via the Brachina Gorge.

It is a great drive with very interesting geology that at least the 9 year old can follow.
There are a couple of spots we stopped at where you can literally pick up every third piece of rock and find a small fossil about 3 or 4 mm across.
We had two 6 year olds who just had an amazing time.
We then went to the Prairie Hotel at Parachilna for a Road Kill Mixed grill for lunch and arrived at Marree late afternoon.
The cabin at the Marree Pub was clean and comfortable.
Farina is an old rail head about 1 1/2 hours up the road from Parachilna where there is often a team rebuilding parts of the town at this time of year.
They have the old underground bakery going which is a good spot for afternoon tea.
Enjoy

Also in Renmark, you can stay at the Golf and Country Club. The family room is very affordable and the kangaroos come out to play on the golf course. The bistro is pretty good too.Originally posted by 404pug View PostIf Mildura is full there is a great caravan park on the river in Rennmark. Unless you have a particular reason to go to Parkes this trip, Cobar to the Shire is doable in a long day and you will avoid the nightmare of coming down through the mountains on a Sunday arvo [and Parkes is an easy weekend trip anyway]. The eastern loop from Old Andado to AS is a very pretty trip if you don't want to go via Finke [ which is also a good trip but worth more time with Chambers Pillar etc off that road.] I tend to spend more time in the furthest out places on long trips on the basis that the closer in stuff can be done on shorter trips. Renmark pub and RSL good for meals.

Planning and prep pretty much all done & weights calculated (its close!!
). Going to knock up some rear window shades this weekend and that's it.
Test trip completed the other weekend to see we go sharing a swag with the little un - Its cosy but doable. Using a doona in the double swag not sleeping bags. The boys won't contemplate sleeping in anything else on the trip . It makes the car a bit heavier carrying 3 swags but not having to pack up 5 sleeping bags and mats and one or two tents everyday for 2 weeks is a the benefit.
Only issue is now the weather. All of our tracks are closed at the moment... Still 4 weeks out so time to dry out but Birsdville had 32mm on Friday and is completely cut off.

Yeah. It's not my itinerary. The trip leader liked his high speed touring. We will have some long days.Originally posted by Scruffy View PostYou itinerary is a bit optimistic for Marree to Oodnadatta in one day. 400km off road per day is a lot. We drove from Marree to William Creek and this gave us time to stop and enjoy the spa at Coward Springs and see lots of stuff on the way!
.
Main purpose of this trip is the Hay River track. We will revisit later and take our time.[SIZE=2]120 GXL D4D Auto, with a 'List of Wants' greater than the 'List of Needs' greater than the 'List of Haves'

Looking forward to your trip report in a few days.
I'm looking to do Simpson with 5 in the car next winter (2017). Just curious if anyone knows if you can get other food at Mt Dare - like tins of spag, vegies, eggs, bacon, milk? Would save me a lot of space.2016 Crystal Pearl Auto VX 2.8, TJM Bar, Safari Snorkel, Cooper AT/3, OME 50mm lift, Dual batts

Mt Dare has the typical supplies of an outback roadhouse in that area. tinned and frozen food like veggies and spag and bacon wouldn't be a problem. Long life milk will be available but can't remember seeing fresh milk there. Eggs might be pushing it but you never know.Originally posted by Bobcrusader View PostLooking forward to your trip report in a few days.
