Final fitup of the led spotties.

They were only single bolted in the middle.

Now they both have 2x spring washer and lock nuts + original bolt left in the middle.

Single bolt worked fine over the last few years, yet reckon this Darwin, Cunnamulla, Simmo Desert and surrounds, EPIC adventure through to The Fink, Alice then home might require a bit more sturdiness from my gear..!

I would be putting the 2 best tyres on the back. They do the most work in loaded car and they cop the rubbish thrown up by the front wheels. I believe this is the current thinking in the tyre industry. Most punctures in the outback are apparently on the back and especially the left.

Thanks 404pug, you’ve offered a lot of great advice over the course of my prep for this trip, thank you and I’ll do my best.

I’ll keep the best rubber on the front until I get to the desert proper, gives me some exercise when I change them, and allows me to show my daughter how to change a tyre, again, I think she was 6 or so the first time, and a few since, gotta keep reinforcing the how to safely method of doing stuff..!

Well just completed a Solo crossing with the family East to west. This was my third crossing we did the French line the whole way this time for a change as the previous crossings we changed tracks . 7 solo vehicles, a 120 Prado with 6 people in it and I still don’t know how they did it ( it was so low ) a Gold Stream Camper and many more groups we ran into.
The Birdsville Track was really bad and it did close we had a section of around 130km’s of mud.

Already thingking about doing it again next year and maybe combine a few days with the Finke races.

thanks for posting the photos it really puts things in perspective for those of us who havent done the trip. What tyre presure were you running , do you alter it much as you went? And how long did you spend doing it ?

Mate every time i have crossed it has taken 3 to 3 1/2 days . It really depends on what route you take and what size group your in or solo. It doesn't take long at all to go down to the Lone Gum Tree it's the average pace. This time East to West which is supposed to be the hard way but it wasn't too bad. It's funny to listen to people complain how rough it was though.
You can see where people have had their tyre pressures to high on the dunes when the wheels have spun or left the ground.
16 , 18 psi is what we ran as a cold pressure which increased to 20 to 22psi depending on the time of day. That also gave me the option of going down lower if needed anyway.
