For what it's worth we did Skytrek almost 2 years' ago and were very disappointed with it, especially for the price they were charging. I agree with a lot of the comments already made.

However, I can highly recommend Mulga View Station for a self-drive, between Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola (can't remember the distances exactly without looking them up). It costs about $20 per car and is about a 5 hour loop. The views out to the east and over Lake Frome and beyond are absolutely stunning if it's a clear day. It is rocky in places and good vehicle placement is required at times, but overall we thought was much better than SkyTrek, just for the experience alone. This link http://www.overlander.com.au/destina...ers-Ranges,-SA also mentions a few great places to go, a lot of which have already been suggested in this thread.

Anyway, that's my opinion for what it's worth.

Trev, the route now is not even up over the hills.... its a mess of a bull dust track for 30km !!!! They should be closing the place till they sort their shit out, not ripping off people for something they can provide, that in a word is the name of the place SKYTREK...... bullshit from start to finish.

Irony is that they are a group of shooters that brought the propperty and now all that they have to shoot is Rabbits. So if they want to make something from it they should start thinking about what they have and what it could be.

Has anybody done Skytrek recently? Am going to Wilpena with a group of friends some of which have a standard Patrol, Triton & Challenger and they have mentioned it. I cannot find anything recently. Any other suggestions based on the other vehicles will be welcome - thanks.

It might depend on what you're after. If you're after spectacular view and difficult 4wd'ing then I'd say don't bother. If you're after a guided (by book) trip with fairly easy 4wd'ing then give it a go.

We did it last September and I thought it was a bit boring and bumpy. Scroll back and you'll see the history - Willow Springs lost access to the fun bits so now you drive around the flat bits of their property for 80% of the trip before going up/down some hills at the end. The view at the end lookout would be about the same as the one from the free lookout accessed from the main road - they are only about 250m apart (perhaps a bit more - certainly not far). The booklet was interesting. I think we did it in 3hrs - not sure how people take 9hrs (as I read some do!).

The conservation mob who own the original SkyTrek route will let you do it - see http://www.caernarvontrack.com/ - I'm not sure how hard it is though. At least it gets higher so you get a better view.

Its definitely open, we returned from there last week. I had a great time enjoying the scenery & the driving especially the last 15 kilometres of the 80 km trek.
