Just in the planning stages for an Anne Beadell crossing next year (July 2019). We travelled the Gunbarrel this year from Carnegie to its Junction with the Heather Highway (so not the abandoned section). I am trying to get a feel for the conditions we are likely to encounter on the Anne Beadell using our experience of the Gunbarrel as a benchmark. As anyone completed both the Anne Beadell and the Gunbarrel in the last two to three years and therefore able to provide some comparative comments?

I did both four years ago so probably not relevant anymore, generally things can change a lot in a few weeks let alone years.
Both were fairly average back then, plenty of corrigations and washouts etc. I believe the road has been recently graded from
the Woomera end to EMU which was one of the worst sections so that should have improved that though when you read
of some of the idiots who travel on these roads when there wet it may be back to what it was by now.
Don't forget to make sure the road open and hasn't been closed by the department of defense.
Really nice drive, enjoy your trip.HKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others

Thanks for your reply, Leigh. As you say, a lot can change in a few weeks, but still good to have your thoughts. I am wondering from what source you heard that the Woomera end to Emu has been graded recently (presumably that means Coober Pedy to Emu). Was it a reliable source? Also, thanks for the reminder to check on Defence closures. I have been placed on the relevant Defence Department email list for updates on exclusion dates. Dates for the latter half of next year will not be available until March, which makes planning for next year a bit tricky.

Was on exploreoz
"Ok i am partly answering my own Question. Just rang the lands Council. They confirmed theMaralinga to Emu Rd has been permanently closed. I guess that isn't to much of a surprise given some vandalism at Stonehenge."Emu - Maralinga Road. I was there in April with the crew as MT provided permission for our quad expedition retracing the route of R.T. Maurice through Maralinga and up towards the Everards. As usual Robin was a great host and we finally got to undertake his awesome range tour before heading off on the quads.
"The ABH was graded from Volkes back in April all the way through to Mabel Creek by Robin. The Air force came through with a bit of extra money for diesel which allowed him to take it all they way through to Mabel from Tallaringa. It was not without it's challenges though and if you ever get to hear Robins story of how he and the mate walked the grader out of a bog inch by inch using the blade (it took a couple of days), you will both marvel and piss yourself laughing. He also graded the full length of the
Yes the emu road is currently closed although MT Council are honoring access for groups who had prior bookings. It needs to be remembered that Emu Road access does not guarantee access to stone-henge and that is something that has to be negotiated.I was speaking with Robin at length last night so this is quite a timely question. It is hoped that in the next few months a decision will be made around use of the Emu Road. Robin hopes this will be positive given the tourism potential for the MT people."HKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others

Thanks, Leigh. I have traced the discussion back to ExplorOz. By the time we hit the trail next July, it will be more than three years since Robin put his grader over this section of the Anne Beadell. As you have said previously, three weeks is a long time for a desert road, let alone three years - so could be anything next year. Thanks again. Ray

I just did Volkes Hill Corner west to the Great Central Road 10 days ago. The SA section was ok with short corrugated sections but when the road straightened out just after the WA border the corrugations became a lot worse but 70-80 kph was ok. The SA section was slower because it was narrower. The scenery is terrific. A great trip.
