  • SNOW TRIP - Weekend of August 22nd in NSW. Keen to camp in the snow Friday and Saturday nights. Not sure where yet, Glen it would great if you could make it, but if you can't I might grab some gps details of your recent trip if you have them. (I have chains).

If I can't get a trip going in NSW for the above dates I'm happy to head down to VIC.

    Cheers,
    Jamie

    • EOI: Camping Newnes/Turon 20th Sept

I've promised I'll take my eldest (6yrs) camping weekend of 20th. (He's p**ed that his mum & siblings are in Adelaide that week without him). Thought I'd see if anyone else was interested?

We are having new suspension on the 4th and drifta drawers fitted on the 18th. Which means I've got to learn to repack the car before our trip to Fraser. So thought I'd use this all as a test run!

Current rough plan (subject to weather) is head up to Newnes on Sat via Zig Zag Railway>Old Bells Line of road>Blackfellows>Then take the sprog camping & exploring the ruins at Newnes with an early departure on Sunday - have to be back in Sydney by lunch. Also tossing up Capertee-Sofala/Hill End. Not sure how busy either is likely to be being the first day of the school hols though?

I haven't been this way before so happy to receive suggestions on route (was contemplating Newnes via Baal Bone Gap, but really not keen to do it by myself).

I want to keep it a real easy trip as at this stage as its just me (possibly one other car with two kids). We're heading to Fraser the following week, so I really don't want to break anything. You'll have to wait for one of Glen's engine mount cracking, diff busting specials if you want anything harder.

      • You might want to re-think Baal Bone Gap - Last time I was there, there were a few BIG holes at one of the sections of steps. I was by myself and turned around so as not to risk vehicle damage.

        • Yeah. I saw the vids from GlenEp's last trip report. I was half hoping there might have been some track repair by Parks since then. But I firmly believe they're trying to keep humans out of the National Parks. I understand there's another way that avoids the steps, but I think I'll leave it for another day

          • The initial climb / steps are getting very bad. The section that I went to was starting to look bad to which you can get to in most soft roaders (driven right) by following the power lines.

            • Sofala

Any recommendations for good 4wd tracks close to Sofala in New South Wales?

Nice steep hill climb with plenty of "wombat holes" would be great to tackle.

              • Explore around the bridle track on the other side of Hill End (along the Turon River). There's quite a few side tracks in that area, and to start you off, have a look behind / right of the crusher (map location here). Be warned though, that area has sharp rocks and some bad angles, which can be a dangerous combination. Most tracks are fine, a few require careful judgement.

How far do you want to drive - gardens of Stone NP, Baal Bone area, Mt Walker and Turon NP. That entire area has some brilliant driving.

                    • Hey Guys, heading to turon this weekend with my boy and the old man. I roughly recall two roads to access the camping areas and aware there are creek/river crossings. I do remember one access road was a bit more gentle than the other easier to access via a normal car? I could be wrong... He is driving a VW SUV.

                      • There last weekend. Rivers are all just about dry.
Turon is a very easy drive at present. having said that, if you go exploring there is some very heavily rutted areas. Just make sure you are in front so you can make a call on turning back.

You're correct. From the Capertee side, once you turn onto the Turon NP access road and crossed the cattle grid, proceed ~1.75km, and at Y junction take the left hand road. Right track is definitely steeper and leads to the hardest river crossing in the area (feels like driving in marbles). Like Malcom pointed out the rivers are low at the moment but that one crossing is still slippery.

Last weekend I wasn't keen on the weather, too hot, got burnt. Surprisingly many people camping there for what is a normal weekend - at least 5 groups. The river still had a decent amount of water but it wasn't flowing - and some algae was building up at the main camp site. I get the feeling we're going to have a very hot/dry season...

                            Hi Glen
Nah, had the 100 that weekend with the Landcruiser club.
Quiet funny at Baal Bone Gap, one club at the bottom of the rock discussing the impossibility of driving up it and how difficult it would be to turn around and retreat, plus another club at the top of the rock attaching chains and straps to their trucks so as to lower them down. They all obligingly stepped aside whilst we drove up. Only one truck in our 7 had to be pulled up. Its a very badly rutted there now, was pretty good 6 months ago.

Looks a small tornado has gone through as heaps of tree are snapped off and have fallen everywhere. Never see it like that there before.
