  • I need your helps about Tasmania tour and off-road

    Hi bros.
*** I am sorry if this topic is not allowed in this area, because I am using 90 series, and I have no idea to ask this in our forum, so please forgive me if I am wrong, or Mod please help me to remove it if need ***

We (I and my missus) intend to spend 1 week in Tasmania later next month before the new year.

ALSO IF ANY ONE INTERESTED IN THE TRIP WITH US, WE ARE VERY HAPPY TO GO TOGETHER. MY PLAN IS: DRIVING FROM SYDNEY TO MELBOURNE, THEN TAKE FERRY TO DEVONPORT, GO AROUND TASMANIA, THEN TAKE FERRY BACK TO MEL, BACK HOME.

I haven't been there any time, and I absolutely don't have any of exp of this area.

I would like to ask your exp of:

    - Where to go in Tas? Please tell me what are the most famous and beautiful places to visit in Tas. We intend to visit Devonport, West Tasmania, Hobart (or more if you recommend because I have no idea). But we don't know where we should visit in those areas.

Do you recommend any off-road trip in Tas. I think we can spend 2 days for off-road there if it is not so hard for the car and my missus, because she actually does not like very hard off-road.

    - Where to live in Tas in those areas. We intend to live in either Motel/Hotel or Hostel if they are good.

    - What I need to prepare and bring with my rig. I haven't got any long trip like this in Au before, so I have no exp with the weather or terrain conditions.

I just intend to bring 3 spare tyres (i don't know if it is so many of tyres, but I intend to put one in the front of the car, one on the roof rack), jack, recovery equipment (I don't have winch in my rig)...

I really appreciate your help for my first long trip in Au (as I just think about all of those questions, but if you have more ideas, please don't hesitate to show me).

    Thanks a lot. :P

Well first of all, 1 week in Tassie will not allow you do go off road, as there will be too much to see around the townships. If you do manage to go off road, it would not be into difficult terrain, nor would it be for too long as time will be your enemy, as for carrying 3 spares, I would loose at least one of them, and you can not fit a spare to the front of the vehicle legally, If your looking for places to go, surf the net, I'm sure the Tassie tourisim site will have heaps of info for you as well as current updates, you can also check out the trips and the destination section of this site.

Just one spare tyre will do. It's not like you're crossing the simpson.

Some places to go and visit are:
      Cradle Mountain
      Stanley (The Nut)
      Devil's kitchen
      Port Arthur
      Strahan

      More destinations here:

Tasmania is pretty big. 1 week might be a bit short if you want to see every single thing. Note the travel times and time to pack/unpack each night. When my family went there years ago, we stopped at caravan parks along the way. It's way too big to base your self in one spot and travel to the attractions.

This is sort of like a load question. How long is a piece of string?

The west coast has the rugged beauty of the wilderness while the east coast has the tranquile secenery of the beachs and the middle has the mountains.

loose the extra spare tyres, they are not really needed in this sort of trip. they have tyre shops over there if you really need to get a new one. One spare is more than enough for a week long trip

for a week worth of tripping you will be driving, doing a bit of site seeing on the side (not much IMO) then stopping at night. You arn't guna get a great deal of time to do anything out of the normal tourist things suggested above in a week.
IMO plan for an average of 50km per each hour of traveling. this way you can plan your days.

Near on everyone makes the same mistake about Tassie. Think it's a small place and underestimate it's true size. It mostly takes time to get between places, not actual distance traveled

We went there for our first visit and planned for 2 weeks. spent 2 weeks and did not see what we wanted because we made the mistake of underestimating the 'little' island.
Went back a few years later and spent 2 and a bit years there (moved there with work), still have more to see and do.

Re: I need your helps about Tasmania tour and off-road

We did tassie at the start of the year. We had about two and a bit weeks there and felt a bit rushed to take it all in. We like you, took the ferry over, but started the west coast and worked out way around to finish up the east cost and back to devonport. There were plenty of things we had to skip due to time constraints. Traveling time was the killer due to weather, traffic and roads (windy).

I loved the West coast more. We both enjoy getting out there so we spent a couple nights at lemonthyme lodge and did a 6 hour trek around cradle mountain and beyond. Watch out for the logging trucks, and take care at night, paddymelons are everywhere.

Strahan was beautiful, treat the other half to a gordon river cruise. Dont forget the camera as you get some magnificent reflections off the water if the weather permits. When we stayed here, we stayed at Aloft, nice place and had broadband which I needed for work

For a list of some 4wd tracks check out the parks and wildlife website. Off that list we did a couple of the medium tracks, Jeffreys track and Mt McCall (we were solo). We actually had a some clown in a rented X-trail behind us on Jeffreys Track and lets just say that he was up for about $5K in excess by the end of it. I got talking to him, and assisted him down some of the hairy sections... his missus was blasting him the whole way as he was a little too gung ho, I guess it didn't really matter since he had already damaged panels. Lift is good here. My other half finished off this track (lachlan side) and she had an absolute ball while I was navigator - she spent more time on 3 wheels then 4. For some other tracks check out 4x4 Earth

Much of tassie is very windy, especially the west coast. I hope your other half travels well, just watch out for all the Winnebago who drive 50km/h and refuse to pull over to let the 1 km of stragglers overtake.

For reading, check out This guidebook, you can even pick it up on the spirit of tasmania. Check out Trip Advisor -Tasmania for a list of places to stay and things to do. There are plently of trip itenerys posted on the forum there so check it out.

I could go on all morning about places to go and things to do, but remember to take care off road as things can turn pretty quickly as we found out. Much of the off roading is on very narrow tracks that are on the side of cliff faces so be warned.

Re: I need your helps about Tasmania tour and off-road

Thanks bros so much for all of your helpful ideas.

I am very happy that I just got the last chance to get a ticket for 2 people and one vehicle to Tasmania on the ship. It was a bit frustrating when I tried to order online. There was no Vehicle option for us from the website, all of them are SOLD OUT.

Now it is the time to prepare things to bring with the rig.

ONE QUESTION: I just read one link: http://www.exploroz.com/Journal/2004-5T ... _Coast.asp

and from there, I know that it is NOT ALLOWED TO BRING ANY FRESH FRUIT and VEGETABLES to Tasmania when we board on the ship at Melbourne. I have no idea if this is the present regulation, because the link was the 2005 story.

Bros please help me to confirm this information.

              Thank you

Re: I need your helps about Tasmania tour and off-road

For one week, it would be cheaper to fly down and hire a vehicle and stay in hotels/motels. You need at the very minimum four weeks to see Tasmania, and preferably six weeks. We have been there four times, once for a month, and we still have not covered the whole State. There is so much to see. One week (and I assume that this is one week in Tasmania, not one week from home and back again) will only let you see a very small part. Yes, you cannot take any fruit or vegs, but you can purchase at the fruit market located less than a kilometre from the ferry wharf. You also cannot take any fuel in a chainsaw or generator etc.
