Runva winches , mine failed , think twice about buying one

OK I opened up my control box this afternoon to check the cabling inside. Everything is pretty snug due to the compact size of the control box. Probably too snug as you will see. My first concern was as per P.O.T's issue of chaffing of the cables at the terminals. Everything there was OK with mine with no signs of rubbing whatsoever. In my opinion here is, if everything is tightened up securely then even if contact with the side of the bolt, chaffing should not occur causing a short and the damage that P.O.T experienced. A little more protection will be added just to be sure I case I'm wrong here...
    Firs view, all looks OK

To be sure that there was no chaffing, I removed the cable to check - all good though

As said, to be sure, some extra protection is added with a piece of tubing put around the cable to sit against the adjacent terminal point where P.O.T had his failure. Even though it wasn't a contact point, I also stripped a pice of twin and used the insulation as a grommet for protection as you can see in the top left hand corner of the box...

Now, upon further inspection, the snugness of the control box comes apparent with some nasty chaffing of the control wires on the top of the box exposing bare copper!. Not good, so I'm pleased I checked. You can see this in the next pic.

I have tapped up the bare wires and bent the cables down away from the top of the box now....

And to finish off just to be sure, an extra dose of duct tape over the top of it all.

I will check the condition of the tape after my next winching experience which no doubt won't be too far away... (Unless I'm a clown that works for Runva and only has a winch for show.... . )
However, I do urge everyone as per Prado of Terror's recommendations, to open up their control boxes and double check their cabling.

Proberbly pay to run either some Spiral wrap or split corrugate around them as a bit of insurance........it's really the first negative thing I've heard on the the Runva's and atleast it's an easy fix.....I recently purchased and fitted a 12000lb ewx on my rig and after a lot of Google there seemed to be a lot of good reports on them but I suppose anything can fail....my old 8000lb Warn let me down with solenoid issues more than once back in the day.
            Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....

Yeh I'm the same as yourself. Never heard a bad thing about the Runva's which is why I purchased...
Spiral flex or CC would probably make it too tight as you can see by the rubbing already. I've loaded the cables up with insulation tape as the pics show and have bent the wires down away from possible contact so hopefully should be good now. Still happy with the Runva's performance, however I will send some pics off to Runva for comment...

Mate it was nothing more than pure play until the winch burnt out, halfway up a massive hill climb with some knarly step ups, hell was going back down in reverse, some hectic shit I can say

The new control box that they sent me I cut the bottom plate right out to where the casing meets , plenty of room now , other than this major issue which is a simple dumb engineering design the winch does perform well , it is fast when winching. My problem is way to many manufacturers attempt to get out of warranty issues and are complete pricks when their equipment fails. I m more than likely going to go back to something I know and know that back up support is there, like warn or some one alike

Well I've done a few thousand HV joins and they are all compression fittings..............not one bit of solder insight.

I can hear the popcorn popping now!

Crimp vs solder has been discussed at length previously. Any further discussion in this thread will be considered off topic and will be treated accordingly. Carry on.

That's one reason why I have a huge isolator between the battery and the winch under the bonnet.

Ditto why I have one too, not only that but keep all that available current in the battery de-energised in the event of a frontal MVA. Imagine all that current short circuiting, wouldn't take long and up it goes..
