  • Bullbar weights question

    Hi all,

New here, apologies if this has been written else where, but I haven't found it.

Doesn't anyone have the exact weights of the Toyota Soverign bar (with winch cradle) versus the ARB deluxe bull bar??

Also, I have a 12000lb Ironman winch, are you required to remove these bars (ARB or Toyota) from the vehicle to fit the winch??

Ideally if there isn't much weight difference between the ARB and toyota bar, and the ARB allows fitment of a winch without bar removal, i will go the ARB bar. If there is a significant weight difference i will probably go the Toyota bar and investigate whether the winch can be fitted afterwards, or just do it all myself.

Given that I will have a winch, bar and 2nd battery up front, am I going to need to change the springs too??

    Thanks

    Re: Bullbar weights question

Andrew h, I don't think the weight difference would be masive, having got a yota bar i would go the ARB, it is so much easier to look after, just wash versus constant polish??? i hate my toyota bar now.

      Re: Bullbar weights question

I'm not sure of the bar wieghts (you should be able to be those from ARB and Toyota) but the winch cradle alone for the Soveriegn bar is 26kg. So I doubt there is much if any weight o be saved by geting the Alloy bar. The best way to save weight is to use a synthetic winch cable and alloy hause (saves about 15Kg versus a steel cable and roller fairlead.
It has already been said - get the ARB Steel bar.
Yes, you will need to upgrade the suspension.

You can fit a Warn 9.5 XP winch into the ARB bar with the bar on the car.

          Also,

I think you may struggle to fit a 12000lb winch into a Soveriegn bar.

Thanks for the info guys, if all interesting.

I will endeavor to find the exact weights of the respective bars, including the winch cradle on the Toyota bar, and post em here. Understand the winch cable versus plasma rope, definitely something to think about for sure.

Was hoping to get away without upgrading the suspension, as least for a bit. I have a tentative plan to visit the Kimberlies at some stage in the next year or so, so I would do it before that.

                Re: Bullbar weights question

This thread could end up as a digest of some of the common questions that often get asked about winches and bullbars - together with their answers (hopefully).

Queries I had about the Toyota Sovereign came back (from Toyota) that the mounting kit that comes off/goes on for the alloy bar means that there's not much weight diff between a mounted Sovereign and a mounted ARB dlx. How is the Sov connected - the parts guy tried to tell me it's welded on - that doesn't sound right to me - I would have thought it was bolted for sure. Either way - the bar and any mounting kit minus anything that needs to come off for the bar to go on is the full picture of the weight.

There's another thread kicking around that gives fairlead and plasma comparisons to rollers and wire cable - they're costly but have many other advantages apart from the obvious (and significant) weight ones.

                  Re: Bullbar weights question

Well, I didn't get the individual weights of the bars, but I have ordered an ARB deluxe winch bar. Seems like the best solution. I have seen some on silver Prados lately, and they do look good.

There was a 4wd show on in Wandin Victoria, and I got chatting with the manager from ARB Brighton, the rest is history. Got a few other things too, a cargo barrier, snorkel and a front bash plate. Not a bad days shopping, and some good deals too.

I will probably leave the bar winchless until I decide to do the suspension down the track, then fit up the winch too, probably along with some plasma rope to save weight.

I have been doing a little investigation in fitting a TJM T13 Outback bar in the near future, Bloke at TJM said it comes in around 65kgs. I would imagine the ARB winch bar wouldnt be far from there.

Yep that's what I was told when I bought my T13 bar. From memory the ARB bar was around 80-85kg. Anyone with a ARB bar feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

                          Cheers,

                          Paul.

ARB told me 55kg for the deluxe winch bar, I should have weighed it but didn't.
