    Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

In the general poor form of replying to ones own post....

I've fixed the RFI problem! Turns out that you need more grounding. Here's the setup
    • Power cabling runs from the battery down the passenger side cabling channel near the door.
    • Coax also runs down the cable channel
    • The earth wire from the battery is connected to the body at one of the tie-down points in the rear tray

More earth bonding might improve things even further but it all seems sorted at the moment.

    Cheers,
    Tim

      Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

Has anyone thought about using the AT-7000 tuner attached to the icom radios - rather than the ICOM auto tuners.

These little units seem to be great - and resonably priced

I am considering getting one for a 706MKIIG that i have just got -yet to be fitted to the prado.still trying to figure out what aerial to use on the HF side of things. I have already got the 70cm/2m aerial and one already there for the UHF CB side of things - but still undecided for HF coverage.

Thought i would pop it out therefor review...

          Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

I have fitted up the black box that I ordered from Qld to my Codan 9350. It works absolutly brilliantly!
Its the size of a matchbox and is easily fitted between the 7000 and the Codan. Just hit tune (or transmit) and it tunes up the Codan without any fuss. Does not seem to be able to tune it down to 160m with the standard whip on and I have not tried it with a long wire attached but thats ok.

I was driving up the east coast of Tas last week with Europe booming in 20m, always get a response to a mobile unit on 20m!

I also had RF problems as I had to run the coax and trigger wiring next to each other. When transmitting on 7Mhz the radio would shut down. A couple of ferrite cores has seemed to fix the problem.

Now if it could only be modded to work on uhf cb.....

              Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

The box was designed and built originally by VK1OD. Its comes up if you google his call.
Its an interface between the two units (7000 and 9350).
It takes the tuning side of the Icom and matches it all up to the codans wiring.
Much easier to have a look here http://www.vk1od.net/ic9350/index.htm to get the details.

My codan is mounted at the back on a spare wheel carrier bracket, and the wiring is run down under the right hand side and back up into the car.

You can sort of see it here. I will take some better photos this p.m. and post them.

                Alrighty heres the photos:

The view from the back with the standard whip attached.

Close up of mounting and wiring.

The rear bracket attached to the spare wheel holder.

The wiring runs inside the tubing under the bumper and up through a grommet. No holes drilled.

The radio fits nicely here untill the drawers are built. Then it will be mounted there permanently.
I have a 3m head unit extension cable as well. I forgot to take a photo of the black box but it sits inside the spot where the rear seat lock used to be. i took that out and have a fuse box fitted there now.

The head unit is mounted to an Icom mount and then fixed to a RAM mount and suction cup.
I also run it inplace of the iPhone holder down near the gearstick on occasions.
Small radio is Icom 208H head unit with body mounted under drivers seat and mike extension made from Cat5 cable.

If I can help anymore let me know!

208H does not cover HF - only 2m/70cm radio

Look at either the 7000 or 706MkIIG

                        Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

I got the mount from Someone off here who did not need it any longer. I don't know who made as there are no names on it. I have heard that the is a mob in South Oz who make them up. I spent ages trying to track one down until this came up.

Yep as above208 only does 2m and 70cm (and a few others if you know which bits to mod)  .

I love the 7000, and the 706's are highly recommend as well. I favour Icom gear for particular reason, its just all my radios are. T90A, 207, 208 and the 7000.

                          Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

Yesterday I was playing around with the head unit from the 7000. I had always wondered if it would fit in the sunglass holder in the centre light.

Well it does -sort off. :?
The head unit does fit and quite well but getting to the mic is a little more tricky. I hope to have a bit more of play with this and get it so the holder can close with the head unit in it thus hiding it.
As a bonus the extension cable now runs along the top of the doors behind the weather strip. this is great as it gets it up off the floor where it used to be.

Might have to run a cat5 cable from the main unit up to the dash and run the mike from there. I don't use it much when driving(too hard to tune HF) and I have the 208 for UHF cb and other stuff.

Still good to have a project on the go!

                            Re: Icom IC-7000 Installation

                            RIGHT !

Geez i am slack  - still wanting to install the 706 into the prado - however i am wanting to figure out the best way to power it

Now - i could go many ways - either from the main battery or from the aux battery (for my fridge and extras when camping) for constant power and use the icoms auto power of function - so i dont flatter which ever battery i choose - but its a hell of a long way to run power to the main unit

The other option is to tap into something (still trying to figure out what can power the radio when tx'ing at full power) from the accessories - so that it is powered up whenever the car is (similar to my UHF)

What are your thoughts on this - many different ways to do so. I was thinking of tapping into the power lead that runs to my rear power outlet for my fridge (powered from aux battery) however my only concern - where does the neg go ? Straight to the frame of the car or do i have to run it back to the - on the car bat - pretty sure its gotta go back to the neg on the batt - but ... well ..blah - i could read the manual ops: - however tis easier to pick your brains on here - heaps better than reading stupid manual !!! (that is if i can find it ...)

                            Suggestions please

                              Hi all,

I have an IC7000 that I fitted to my Prado, which has the face fitted to the sunglasses holder using a Icom bracket and a Nokia phone kit bracket.
The microphone I remoted to under the drivers side of the dash from the main unit which is fitted to the underside of the passenger side seat.
The antenna's I am using are a dual band VHF/UHF "Diamond" fitted to the bullbar, and a Codan 9350 Autotune HF fitted to a custom made spare wheel carrier bracket which also has a shovel holder and auxillary light mount (not fitted in pic)
This may give a few more ideas for locations to fit these types of radios.

                              Cheers, Mat (vk5hmw)
