  • E Lockers

I was at OL in Adelaide the other day talking to the rep about compressors and the good and bad points for in cabin mounting. When the conversation turned to lockers he asked if I had heard of a E locker. Apparently the diff lock is activated via 12v instead of the typical air compressor.

I then asked if it's better to install the front locker first or the rear. This is where it got intersting. I was told that in a Prado, you'd replace the rear because the Toyota LSD is a weak link. If it was a Nissan, you'd install the locker in the front because the LSD is tougher.

My 2 questions are, how good are these e lockers and is there any truth in the Toyota LSD being weak??????

    Over to you guys........

Yeah Toyota LSD are nothing special.

Better with a rear locker because if you get cross axed, and you engage a single locker (front or rear) only 1 axle shaft (wheel) will be driving you. I'd rather not have the full weight of the vehicle being driven by a single CV shaft in the front.

I'm not sure about the 120 but in the case of the 90, the rear diff is much tougher and would better cope with the strain a locker can place on the diff.

Probably also helps his case that The E-locker is only available for the rear on a prado...

The 120 and 90 series use the same rear diff.

You would have to cut the housing and tap to fit the elocker and fab up wiring. Quite common here in the USA. A friend of mine designed a very good wiring diagram but I can't find it online ATM. Google Mike Carter elocker diagram.

Yeah I read about the Harrop e-locker in one of the 4x4 action mags, apparently they're very good but I guess time will tell. I have ARB lockers front and back, and I've had the front locker out 4 times now because it keeps leaking! Not happy and it's out of warranty so I have to pay about $500 each time for labour. Now my compressor has a leak too.. If I had my time again I'd go the e-locker, although no option in the front as yet.

                Likewise double-d
I had air lockers before, and I just don't want a compressor or the air lines etc, too many issues before. I spoke to the e-locker guy here in wa and they said that harrop are working on the front, so shouldn't be long.

Or go for an Auto Locker, no compressor, wires, etc (provided you have an auto not a manual) see here:

                  http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-Systems-Lokka

and it's a lot cheaper - rear only though.

i'm trying to get some feedback from anyone that's fitted an E-locker front or rear

                    i'm thinking about getting a front E-locker for my 2006 120

                    [the rear locker is standard]

Had mine fitted Friday, just got back from a weekend camping and 4WDing. Had to use the locker a few times on some incredibly steep tracks and it worked fine. I have hooked the locker switch into the factory locker dash light and also thinking of installing the factory switch for that factory look. I haven't heard anything bad about them, they are a bit expensive $1800 fitted but no seals to replace like some of the air lockers. I have noted ARB lockers are down under $1000 each so that could be a cheaper option.

Had my rear fitted 6 months ago. Did Fraser recently with no issues at all. I recommend them.

i like the fact that the E-locker seems to be the 'fit and forget' and 'dont worry about it' option
that's then worth paying a bit more for me

as i'm not renowned for my strict maintenance schedule...

I keep hearing stories like this about the ARB lockers, so I won't be blowing my hard earned on them.

I will be going for e-lockers.
