    • Hi All

Does anyone now if the FJ Cruiser has the same problems with the diffs?
Will the FJ rear Diff swap straight into a 120 series?
I know that the FJ has a factory rear diff lock is this air or electric operated?

Yes the FJ cruiser has the same 8" diff assembly. The final drive ratio might be different because of the larger tyres that the FJ has as standard, so a straight swap could require you to reuse the crown wheel and pinion gear from your 120, which is the part that fails under extreme off road conditions.

The FJ rear locker is electric.

        • I think the FJ cruiser is based on the 150 which has a larger rear diff than the 120 now. I think it's one to 8.5"

8.25" rear diff. But the 150 has more weight too which I think will off set any increase in diff strength.

            • the FJ cruiser has a unique bolt pattern where the 3rd member bolts to the housing. this is due to having the electric locker. i am also led to believe that the axles are also different. specifics i am unsure of.

the diff housing is also braced from the centre outwards along the underside for added strength due to additional stress from the factory locker.

the shock mounting set up on the FJ is better than the 120 or 150 prado as it allows for a larger body shock, and for a longer travel set up without the shocks hitting the diff housing and side of chassis under full droop when using a 650mm or longer open shock. (my shocks touch the diff housing and side of the chassis when at full droop)

              • I run Nitro's 4.56 ratios... love em! Solid pinion spacers too + ARB lockers. It's not a cheap exercise but the benefits are well worth it, especially if you run 33" tyres.

8608 - I used to have the same issues with the shocks, then I replaced with SRC shockies which have the shock up the top and shaft on the bottom... doesn't foul anything now. There are pleny of other brand shocks now which are designed the same.

                  • OK. Add me to the list too.
Up at the powerline track yesterday, last hill of the day (of course)
Not much traction, then suddenly gripped on a rock and BANG.
Clunk clunk, every rotation of the tyres.
Removed the rear tailshaft and limped it out to the road very slowly, and called the towy from there.
From what I can tell from reading this thread (it gets very long and tiring) I will need a new Crown Wheel & Pinion Gear?

I feel for you, however, no shame in damaging anything on one of WA's (and I dare say Australia's) best 4wd offerings

                      • I'm the latest member of the Diff Club after giving it the berries (with both lockers) trying to get up the top of 2nd gear hill climb at the springs 4x4 park. A bit too much bouncing on the 33's and snap goes the crownwheel/pinion.... a little dissapointed as I thought I wouldn't be able to break these Nitro gears with the solid spacer, but hey if you try hard enough!!

It took me about an hour to winch out and remove the tail shaft... managed to drive in 2wd for the rest of the w/end and got home ok, no noises after about 250km of driving. Currently ordering a new gear set from the states, costs about $300 inc shipping + getting it fitted locally. Will post some pics of the damage when I get it all done.

Was glad to have caught up with you out there over the break.
Some of those trails at the Springs are real hard on the drivetain. After all it is Granite Country.
However was so glad to see your 120 conquer "Beer O'Clock Hill" with ease on Friday arvo.
Even some of the comp rigs didn't make it up or broke diffs and twisted tail shafts trying.
It looked like yours and the Blue Jeep Rubicon made it look like a piece of cake.

                          Cheers.

                            • Was with a mate in his 120 a couple of weeks ago near Rawson in Vic. We were going up the first track (Deep Creek #1) for a three day weekend just after we changed a tyre that got spiked, he bounced it a bit high and came down with a bang and then clunk, clunk. We managed to take the tailshaft out, but then had to remove the diff as pieces of the crown or pinion had lodged and jammed it up. After three hours doing that in the mud and rain we started winching. A total of two days winching up a very steep hill later we got it to where the road levelled out and could drive it very slowly to Walhalla to be picked up by a flat bed. We had all sorts of other vehicles on hand to try snatching, towing etc, but the track was too steep and it did not stop raining for the two days. Not a fun way to spend a long weekend, but at least we saved on fuel.
