  • I gather the wear was where the pneumatic seal fits, not the diff as such, anyway the local ARB mechanic insisted they send a new diff and that is what they are doing or hopefully have done. Its not quite the same as the problem Nika had as the compressor wasn't cycling on with the lockers switched on, so not pressurising the diff.

I must say I am starting to get turned off ARB, air locker problems, Fridge had to be replaced, 3 bullbars and then I ended up fixing the faults with that myself................ anyone else see a trend here?

    Cheers Andrew

    • The diffs were fitted by our local ARB accredited installer. A qualified machanic with decades of experience and a very good reputation for quality work, hard to stay in business for 40 years in a small country town if your not doing good work. The fridge was the thermistor that packed up, fridge still got cold but the temp sensor just keep reading 50 degrees, so the compressor just kept running. Apparantly mine was only the 3rd fridge to have this problem although I know of at least one more since mine. The thermistor in the early 47l fridges is a non servicable item and can not be repaired or replaced, they have changed this with the current fridge so they can be replaced easily and cheaply I believe. They replaced the fridge with out question so the warranty side of things is good, It's just needing the warranty so often on their products that is the concern.

      Cheers Andrew

      • Looks like I am the newest member to this club. I was climbing a sandstone hill and got the side step hooked up, reversed back so I could take another line, put in back into drive and there was a loud crack when I got up the hill there is a bang nosie coming from the rear diff. I will pull the centre out this week to check the damage.
        Cheers, Terry.

        • Was the crack as you changed gear or with the loud pedal engaged?

                  • Hi Mal
Sorry to hear about the Diff mate.
I remember a thread titled along the lines of the "Rear Diff Club" with some interesting write ups regarding what caused the problem and the solutions people came to.
Not sure how you will go with any out of warranty claim but good luck.
                    Cheers

                    • I think diff problems normally occur in offroad situations, in which case you may not have a leg to stand on. The only instance of a diff failing while driven on road that I have heard off, was when the bearings collapsed and seized due to lack of oil.

Do you know what failed exactly? Bearings? Crown-wheel/pinion gears? Diff centre?

                        • Gee Mal, cant imagine how you would have blown the diff, given your gently gently approach to 4WDriving.

Maybe a Mod could merge this thread with the diff club thread!

hey thanks guys, will read the thread, as usual toyota recon a rear diff is rear , so i will find out more on the thread. Hard to know what let go both the crown wheel and pinion are both damaged. Up in the high country with the tvan just crawling up a steep incline when it let go.5 hours of winching up to a flat spot and then a day pulling the drive shaft off and the crown wheel out then reasembling and getiing back out in 2wd . still believe with only 70000 on the clock and 8 weeks out of warantee toyota should come good.mian reson for the thred is to see if any has been able to get onto toyota direct , l have tried through there customer service 1800 number but you dont know who yo are dealing with and if you can get onto anyone in a senior position. Had been waiting for warantee to run before the locker ,had it on order to fit after the high country trip. they are being fitted at the moment. mal 56

Would like to here if in fact the 150 have a strengthened diff????
