Another member here if somewhat DeFacto

I fitted Prado 3.9 crown wheel and pinion to my Hilux to bring the gearing back to stock when I fitted 32" tyres. Unfortunately this added me to the club in one of the worst possible places.

Thats right - in the middle of the Simpson Desert when climbing a simple dune on the WAA line.

    The results

So after pulling out the centre in the middle of the track we pulled out the crown wheel then put it all back together and started driving out. Not the easiest of tasks with a heavily loaded 4wd trying to climb sand dunes in front wheel drive.

Anyhow after driving around 40kms (around 90 dunes) attached to my mate with a snatch strap we finally made it to the intersection of the Rig Road where the decaying clay capping of the tracks made it possible to drive the rest of the way out.

After finding out I would need to wait over a week in Alice Springs I decided to drive it home to Sydney in FWD.

Oh and the vehicle does have a locker fitted altough not activated at the time as it was a simple dune.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I blew out my diff again....2k miles later.

The 35's are gone and I now have 33" Goodyear wrangler MT/z's.

The only good thing about this is that with about 2 hours of debating it was covered under warranty.

Glad to see they covered it Ben... I was doubtful that they would.... but that's a good result.

Thats unreal Warren. What a predicament you found yourself in. Good to see the FWD Hilux made it home safely though..

              Out with the old ............

... and in with the new

Marty found a brand new open face 120 series complete diff centre for $700

He stripped the LSD unit out of mine and swapped it over.

He also replaced the LSD spring with aone from a 100 series cruiser ... its a bit bigger and stiffer and should improve the operation of the LSD.

It also means that I have a box full of parts for the next stage in the project.

Once I stop spending money on kitchen and laundry tiles I aim to get a new gear set and ARB locker and fit them to this spare carrier.
Then I'll swap the locker unit into the Prado and keep a complete centre as a spare .... for those long trips away where you really can't afford to blow a diff.

The housing got a good clean ...

... and the bolt threads got a bit of a tidy up.

              Everything went in smoothly ...

Axles back in, brakes back together ..... as good as done.

              Cheers

Jeez you're keen Chippy - carrying a whole diff centre as a spare.

What about a spare box, transfer case and engine? You're going to need a good trailer to cart it all about the place!

Toyota made those parts out of metal. But it seems by the time they got to the diff they had run out and had to use porcelain!

I carry a spare diff align with a spare CV axle, tie rod, upper and lower link nut and bolt, and other small stuff. I was thinking about just carrying a 3rd ring gear, but swapping out may be above my skill level.

I was thinking O can find a larger water proof box and mount it to the bottom of the vehicle (where the Prado's aux. tank is) and leave it there when (ultimately) needed. I will probably rebuild after SEMA and the warranty expires.

                          3 diffs Ben ( Flyndrive),
Weld your diff up and put on cheap tires for the road or look at a conversion. How expensive can it be to find an alternative.?
Jeep diffs are strong i thinK  . I wonder if the arctic trucks modify there diffs as the tires they run are HUGE. :?:

                          Just a thought .

                          Chippy ,
It was only luck you had kept the original ones so long.Good luck with the upgrade.

                          Cheers Russ

                            Russ,

The Arctic trucks definitely use stroger diffs.

I'm going to strengthen the bottom end after the warranty expires. Stronger lower gears, ARB air lockers, and chromolly front axles. I already beefed up the Iner tie rods and the sway bar links when they got worn.

Not unless the Troopy takes all my money....shipping, taxes, insurance, and a new windscreen....we will see.

                            Cheers,

An interesting side note to these issues...

Just got the new ARB price list and it lists a new diff size for the 150.

                              120 8" 10 Bolt
                              150 10" 12 Bolt

Seems they were aware of the problems and have upsized to overcome them.

Start looking at the wreckers for complete axle assembly maybe????

Another one here guys, done over the weekend while doing Crooked River. Crown wheel had to be removed on the side of the track. Off to Toyota today. Is there a poll anywhere which records numbers of broken diffs?
