In the States they are called Detroit Lockers.

      Stolen from Eaton.com.

The legendary Detroit Locker began the revolution in performance differentials and still leads the industry today as an Eaton brand. The Detroit Locker is the most durable and dependable locking differential available.
They are used mostly on Jeeps and heavy trucks with the Dana 44 & 60 axles. The FJ comes with rear a locker OEM, and utilize the A-TRAC system, so there is not much need for an additional locker. If an FJ owner adds one it's usually an ARB air locker. They seem to have cornered the market " up here".

$1695 doesn't seem too bad when you add up the price of an air locker +compressor.

I'm sure I read the article / ad in 4x4 australia about their release for Toyota and I think it was even mentioned they were "factory approved" which would make you think it wouldn't cause any warranty hassles.

          Re: Eaton E,locker

So has anyone fitted a detroit (eaton) soft-locker to the rear of a prado yet ?

I found the importer but I think with the Aus$ down the toilet it might be worth waiting til it gets a bit higher
          http://www.locked-drive.com.au/index.php

Or has anyone imported one of the FJ cruiser rear lockers from the states ?

Seems really weird why toyota don't offer lockers as an option in Australia.

            Re: Eaton E,locker

There is no way I would fit an auto locker to the Prado as it is awd. You are better off spending a couple of hundred extra on an air locker. I have driven vehicles with Detroits in the rear and would never have one myself. I did run an auto locker in the front of the Lux and loved it, if the Prado was a parttime 4wd itd already have one in it but being awd its not an option.

              Hey Boof,

Have you seen or heard of these new softlocker (sp?) versions that apparently use 2 or 3 stage lock mechanisms (no audiable sound) and have been recommended by some for constant 4wd ?

I had one of the early ones in a discovery, which made a terrible almost terminal sounding noise each time it locked ?

              Cheers

Hey mate I have driven a couple of vehicles with the series 4 softlocker. While they are better than the cheaper auto lockers they are still noticable, the other thing is they are as expensive as an air locker so I dont see the point. I would always prefer a switched locker over an auto in an AWD vehicle

                  Re: Eaton E,locker

The Eaton Elocker is not the detroit locker,It is a manual locking diff that uses a electromagnetic locking mechanism, not air. like the arb, tjm lockers. These are the same lockers that are fitted to the H3 hummers at the factory. My old 75 toyota had a air locker in it in the mid 90s and the quad ring kept failing and leaking air,That is why i got intrested when i read about these, as i am looking at some type of manual locking diff for the prado .

                      Re: Eaton E,locker

4X4 Custom Action has a comparo of the various Lockers on the market... the E.Locker is mentioned but the article left me with more questions than answers

The article says the ELocker is a manually engaged locker (but without using air)... the main point is their reference to 'unconfirmed' reports of the locker not fully engaging possibly causing extra stress on the mechanism.

Did anybody end up going down the e locker path? I would love some feedback on cost and performance.

                          Re: Eaton E,locker

I am seriously looking at these. I like the idea of no hoses or need for a compressor on board. Eaton/Harrop make good gear, so I don't think quality would be an issue.

The Kakado and ZR have a factory fitted E Locker (unless you get the Cruise pack). Some overseas models of the 120 also came factory fitted with the Toyota version of the E Locker for the rear diff. I think the guy with the shorty in the UK has one.

Dosn't the 120 series GXL prado already have an LSD with lock function?

I recall seeing this when I test drove one.
