HI ALL Broached the subject of changing auto trans oil at 100k while buying some engine oil the other day at Toyota the other day.Service manager insists on not changing if not required to the point of me having to demand it be changed even though prado has no ties to Toyota any more and I am willing to pay what ever.After half hour of talking ,what sort of driving I have been doing this and that we agreed to look at it at 120-130k Gees they get very defencive of there product when you put a few curly questions at them.TINKERA.

My vehicle has just hit 80k and not knowing its full history thought I'd change all the drive line fluids including the auto transmission.
I'm happy to do everything myself except the transmission, so I rang a mate who is a Service Advisor for a local Toyota dealer and he gave me the line about not having to look at changing it until it reaches 160k.
I was shocked when I asked how much it would cost and he said about $420 :shock: :shock: :shock:
Reason being they used about 20 litres of expensive tranny fluid (WS spec) to flush it through.
Has anyone else been quoted similar amounts by their Toyota dealer or service centre?

Naive hope that the Toyota "stealer-ship" service fee might not be the extortionate price it is.
I did not get around to asking what the "mates rate" might be, but I have been looked after :wink: in the past.
I tried to break down how they might get to a price of $420 - Lets say 1 hours labour @ $100, that leaves $320 for ATF. 20 litres for $320 is $16/litre which is not a bad price for synthetic ATF. Think the PENRITE stuff goes for around $23/litre here in Perth - I checked the PENRITE website and Toyota Type WS ATF is supposed to be equivalent to ATF MHP or their SIN ATF.
Recently I have also spoken to a guy who runs his own well known and respected Diff/Trans business about changing the fluid in these 5 speed autoboxes and he said that changing at 40k internals would be good insurance for long tranny life BUT he did not say bring it to him to do the service :?: :?: :?: I 'm not sure why.

have now changed the trans fluid 3 times ,i just do like oil change dump old oil and top up with new, a decent funnel and a steady hand ,the toyota guy said theirs no filter to replace , it apparently has a mesh gauze in the line somewhere regards craig

Hi All,

A price update on the cost of a 5 speed auto fluid change from my local toyota dealer.
The fleet rate I was given is $290. I was told they use about 15 litres of ATF (Toyota WS) during the flush.
At that rate i will be booking it in before my next trip to Steep Point.

I also changed the diff and transfer case oils on the weekend (85K), used Penerite LIM SLIP 90 for the diffs and Transaxle 75 for the transfer case. Oils did not look to bad, but interestingly after the change, the slight but occasional thunk I used to get on pulling up at the lights has disappeared altogether and I have not greased the Uni Joints or tail shaft splines yet either. :?:

Does anyone have recommendations on what the best grease to use is? I would like to use the same grease in both the unis and slip joints but my reading suggests that you should avoid using Moly based grease in the unis when it is recommended for the slip joints. Any suggestions here will be appreciated. Also, how much is enough?

The diff clunk might have disappeared because the Penrite Limslip 90 is a 80W90 weight oil not a straight 90W.

i'm new to the forum , just got my 2006, 4.0 L , V6 automatic prado second handless than one month , since then i've been redaing and seraching the PP forum which i found very usful and informative.

my car is done 168,000 KM , ive changed all the filters and oils , fan belt, spark plugs .
but i didn't find the TOYOTA ATF WS oil i only found TOYOTA ATF type IV, the guy at the spare parts shop told me that all the toyotas uses this oil ( my prado isn't that poular in egypt we mostly have deisel and 4 CYL. the 1-GRFE & 5speed auto is quite rare) ..

i rang up the dealer today and they told me they don't have the original toyota oil and they use normal transmition oil manefactrued by MOBIL.

shall i go ahead with toyota ATF type IV , bearing in mind that i've checked my transimition oil and it didn't smell good.

It is not uncommon for dealerships to use universal application, non-genuine oils/fluids to reduce operating costs and inventories. However, the correct ATF for your 2006 5 speed will be the WS spec fluid. The type IV is not a synthetic fluid and will not meet the viscosity specs or have the long term stability of the WS long life fluid. Although I have heard of Toyota owners using other products such as Redline D4 or D6 ATF, it's a potentially highly expensive gamble to use other fluids which could very well damage your transmission. I would insist that your Toyota dealer get on the phone and order the correct "WS" fluid. I'm sure they would have access to it.

I live in South Africa and I drive a 2003 Prado 120 (4.0VX 4 Speed Auto). A few months back during my 120 000 Km Service I asked the dealer to also change my ATF. I did this because I went up a hectic climb on a steep un-tarred Mountain pass with a lot of stop and go navigating my way over and around frozen water in the road at a place called the sani pass in Lesotho, and I wanted to make sure the ATF is good and not burnt. After the service which is not 7000 Kms ago I started realiseing my gearbox is not as smooth as before, It makes a shifts very hard into 1st and reverse as well as it feels a bit jerky when it needs to break lock up in 4th to down shift. My wife says its my imagination but what do woman know about cars? :wink:

I then read in my owners manual that my owners manual not to use any other oil then Toyota ATF Type T-IV in my gearbox. I looked at the invoice from the service and it did not specify type of oil used. I then went back to the dealer and asked what oil to use in my car. They then told me Toyota ATF WS. I see in some previous posts you guys also mentioned the WS spec oil. No I am confused. Should my car take the WS or the Type T-IV as per the owners manual? Is the WS not maybe meant for later models :? :?

In any case I was also wondering about how to flush the system because If I need to swap out the oil with the Type T-IV it would only dilute the oil if I drain the sump and refill it again.

I drove a Pajero previously and had a decent Manufacturers Service Manual for it, which specified this procedure. IIRRC it goes something like draining the sump, refill, remove the oil hose from the oil cooler, idle the car for 30 seconds, add 2 litres of oil, repeat ... and it used 9 liters of oild but I could only buy 4 litre cans so I had to get 12 liters.

The problem I have trying to DIY anything on my Prado is that I have not been able to find a proper Manufacturer Service Manual anywhere online and when I asked the dealer if I could buy one from them, they looked at me funny.

Sorry for such a mouth full on my first post. Hope you guys will be able to offer me some good advice 8) 8)

if your manual states ATF type IV , then this is the oil you should use

Hi Guys

In the ended up buying 3 cans of Toyota ATF Type T-IV from 3 different Toyota dealers as they are all having stock issues.

On Saturday I drained the sump on the gearbox, 3 litres of back goo came out, so it meant at the previous services they not only most probably used the wrong oil but also overfilled it. I guess the okes there don't know the difference between the 4 and 5 speed gearbox.

After draining the sump, I added 2 litres of new ATF down the dipstick pipe with the help of a piece of hose pipe and a funnel.
Then I removed the return pipe running back from the radiator to the sump. (bottom pipe) and bend it down into an empty 2 litre cooldrink bottle.
I started the engine and drained 1.5 litres into the bottle. Then I refilled 1.5 litres into the sump and repeated.
This step I repeated until the ATF changed colour.

In the end I ended up using the whole 12 litres before I was happy that the colour of the ATF draining was coming out red in stead of black.
