Is that the DVD with the Watagans trip featured? I haven't had a chance to watch it all.

Or is it the latest issue :?: I'm a subscriber so I get my issue three weeks later then the general public! Go figure that!

They weren't that fair on the traction control in the first hill when you look at it.
When the locked prado has a go it had a different driver and you can hear when it starts to struggle getting up, he pushes a little harder on the go peddle.

I am not saying that traction control is as good as a locked prado but if they gave it a few more herbs without going silly it would have made it to.

Also when they are talking about the price difference with the prados we are not just talking about traction control there are many other differences that come with the extra $$

Yes the one with the Watagans trip, issue 110.

P.S. I don't want to spoil the DVD for anyone, so don't read on if this may be the case.

If you do read below, hope it makes you want to see it and share your comments...

I thought it was more of an advertising campaign for ARB air lockers.

While they are superior than traction control, the first hill, the traction control Prado would have made it with a bit more stick as Addy mentioned.

The vid then cuts scenes and showed more traction control action followed by a smoky bit of black gravel that obviously had a spinning tyre in the same position for a while to get that hot. Obviously I think a scene from the plain GXL Prado not the TC equipped one by the look of the indent in the ground.

The soft sand action showed the deficiences in traction control system quite well with not all wheels getting constant momentum.

Sure I except this, however the scene played at 2 x speed showing all three prados climbing the dunes with the guy in the Air Locker Prado jumping up and down at the top of the dune was pretty lame as both the TC Prado and the Airlocker one got to the same height up the dune before getting bogged.

I suppose these guys that make these DVD's get paid by the amount of advertising, however you really have to take some of it with a grain of salt.

Ok so these guys probably don't know about the Sep spec update where you can now have a GX Prado with TC, however why compare a Grande with a GXL when they could have compared it with a VX??

            Joedan,

I can't agree more with your summary of the traction device comparison on the DVD. I'm a fan of ARB and have a rear locker installed, but I found it to be nothing more than propaganda for ARB.

Tried to find a bit more info on the spontaneously combusting Bribie Island Prado to no avail. If I can track down the outcome I will post it here.

How do air lockers on the rear only go in soft sand? Would they make much of a difference? I am having ARB instal one in my GXL in a couple of weeks and am really interested in if it makes much of a difference in towing my camper over the dunes any easier.

My experience with a rear Airlocker is that it is of minimal, if any advantage in the sand.

Thanks Leachy_9, thats what I figured but was hoping that they might give a bit more traction. Looks like I will be getting some maxtrax as well then and a better shovel.

                      Hey Leachy

I reckon the best way to maintain traction in the sand, with a locker, is to not bump the compressor switch off with your knee

                      What do you reckon ??

Your avatar just about says it all

So what would happen if you had diff locks and TC? Would the TC impede movement by braking a lifted wheel or would the TC not come on as it wouldn't detect loss of traction?

The TC wouldn't do anything because when the diff locks were in all wheels are driving at equal speed. TC only works when a different wheel speed is detected.

                            VSC and soft sand

Has anyone had any problems with the new Prado Grande on soft sand? Have just bought a new Grande last week and tried to take in onto soft sand on Stockton Beach (NSW).

Locked the diff (which is meant to to turn VSC off) BUT as soon as I hit the first soft deep sand the car started to stop and shudder. I backed out sucessfully but was reluctant to take it in again until I figured out what was happening.

I owned a Pajero Exceed before the Prado and had no problems on the beach.

                            Any comments welcome.

I have found that the above publication and the associated dvd's are purely for advertising products.
Sure I realise that they pay for the dvd to be made and rightly they get their product mentioned but those dvd's make me cringe with the blatent ploys.
I am glad I didn't pay for those dvd's as the quality of them leaves a lot to be desired.
And no I don't buy the magazine any more which is a shame because it used to be good.

                              Sorry for the rant.

                                Welcome JohnP,

It sounds like you were still on over inflated tyres, I have a 2003 model Grande and as far as I'm aware there are no changes to the traction control. I rarely noticed the traction control working in the sand, and the only time it should work is if it detects a wheel spinning faster than its opposite.
If it still does it with your centre diff locked and a reasonable tyre pressure there may be an issue with it.!!
