The D27 seems to be almost identical in size to my current battery, probably heavier though. I didn't notice any choice of terminal position when looking on the Optima website! might have to look a bit closer.
Cheers Andrew

Have you guys had any longevity issued installing optima AGM's under the bonnet? I'll be up for a new battery soon as mine is a bit weak to kick over in the morning after 3 years of use. I was originally considering an exide extreme as my auxilary battery is an exide ST575.

The D27M & D27F are more or less the same battery except terminals are reversed to
each other.

Optima AGMs are fine for under bonnet installations. Jeep are one manufacturer that fits Redtops as standard and the engine bays (especially a Cherokee CRD) are very cramped and very hot. Friend of mine is on his second one. 1st one lasted a bit over 5 years. Thats why I had no qualms about getting one my Prado.

Hi gxl_d4d, the Optima batteries are ideally suited to Toyota’s low voltage operations.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, Optima batteries are not like most AGMs.
While Optima batteries were developed for military use and are spec'd to a different set of operational requirements, most AGMs, which are virtually spinoffs of the original AGMs like Optima, but are not designed to meet the same operationally requirements because they are specifically designed for STANDBY use, such as RAPS ( Remote Area Power Supplies ) and UPS ( Uninterruptible Power Supplies ) and this means they do not tolerate high charge voltages, high charge currents and high temperature situations.
On the other hand, genuine AUTOMOTIVE grade AGMs, like Optimas, can be used as direct replacements for standard flooded wet cell batteries because they will tolerate high charge voltages, high charge currents and high temperature situations.
The biggest single factor that makes these batteries idea for use in new Toyotas ( and other makes ) is the fact that these batteries will safely take full inrush currents, which means they will take everything your alternator can produce.
When using an Optima in a Toyota, the initial after start high voltage period will replace all the energy used while starting, so by the time the voltage drops to the lower operating level, because the Optimas take full inrush currents, the battery is already charged.
If you use your cranking battery to run accessories while camped, and if you have one of Leigh W’s Voltage Boosters, you can literally charge an Optima from as low as 20% to well over 90% SoC in the first hour of a drive. No other battery can achieve this sort of charging.
Craig, I believe it was $322 all up with courier charge
LD2 - Have you received your D34M yet? I will be interested if both + & - cabling needs to be extended to comfortably meet the battery posts. I have been looking at a couple of other batteries also. You know how it is, every person you talk to has a better product. Items of interest to me are the Deka Intimidator (Seamate version with the additional posts), and the Allrounder. I should know better and decide on a product and then go into lockdown as it's doing my head in... At the end of the day, it's just a bloody battery right?
(still have the Optima at the top of the list,,,,,I think?)
It looks to me that the D27M is the same size as the OE cranking battery, just wondering why you thought it was to long?
I need another battery but not for the Prado, might swap a few batteries around and get an Optima for the Prado, Prado battery goes into Hilux, Hilux battery goes into tip trailer! the extra terminals would neaten things up a bit.
Looks to me like the D27 would fit perfectly apart from the terminals being on the wrong side, but they all are, or am I missing something.
AJ120, I think the battery tray on the Diesel is longer than that of the Petrol and the recommended battery for the diesel is larger also. Therefore the D27 is compatable for the Diesel 120's. Battery length of 120 Diesel is around 305mm for the N70ZZ (Century Yuasa) and the Petrol is 258mm for the NS70. Looking at mine (Petrol) the larger battery would probably squeeze in but 40mm or so would be a) overhanging the batt tray & b) be hard up against an AC Pipe. (not really worth it when the D34M is an 800CCA battery anyway)
Edit: Sorry, Just noticed that LD2 has a D4D so you're right, theres no reason not to go the D27....
Andrew, I stand corrected. I checked out a friends D4D prado which has a stock battery (N70ZZ) and the battery tray is the same length as my V6. Placing my hand down the side and underneath the battery I notice approx 40-50mm overhang. As an exercise, I swapped batteries as I was concerned about the AC pipe. Not a problem , there is about 40 mm gap between the side of the battery and this pipe. So as LeighW suggested, I'll try to get a hold of the D27F which has the battery posts in the correct configuration. I could go the D27M with the additional posts, but I would have to frig around extending the cables etc...
Yep, got the next day after placing the order. I installed this afternoon and did have to extend the negative cable. Managed to get the positive on but tighter than I like. Will extend it tomorrow.
It is smaller than the factor batter and not as tall....looks to need a spacer or possibly need to change the battery hold downs to all thread type as they do not snug down. Using real as the sun sets ingenuity I stuck a couple of sockets on the hold downs to create a spacer so I could snug it up
I really would have liked to have the D27M but it looks to long to me. May add a bit more weight as well. The D34m is lighter overall.
I also had purchased a couple Projecta terminals thinking I would need for extending cables. The only issue with them is they don't seem to lock down on the post as they should.
Craig, I have an Allrounder as my Aux....it does seem to have some charge issues. I top it up with a CTek but if I had my choices probably would not buy another.

I went into the local auto parts store this morning to see if he could order me a D27F, all he wanted to do was sell me a supercharge allrounder. I wasn't worried about the price, not concerned if I pay a bit more but support a local business and don't have the hassles of looking around. Anyway back to the net to see what I can find.
Cheers Andrew
